Yaz I am in the process of getting my taxi license right now so I can tan outside of season but as I understand it with that license you can hold however many furs you want as long as you want as long as all are tagged and such. After Christmas I am going to call a co over and get all the rules but I believe you are correct.

Thanks Yaz for the info, I wondered if it would be worth anything. Almost asked on here before I skinned him but wanted to while he was still warm. Hope you get them all Tony, good luck.

Billy, they send you a copy of the rules with the application. You can probably get the application and rules off their website. I just get my renewal in the mail every year, so I'm not sure.

Gilley, the buyer I worked for years years ago used to wash those in something to get some of the rust off the hair. If I'm not mistaken it was bleach water. He'd skin and scrape, then wash in a bucket of bleach water, then clean water. He's then dry the fur and stretch.

Why would person need a Taxi license for this ? confused

I always thought there was no daily bag or possession limits for Furbearing game animals in Indiana. Which include beaver, coyote, gray fox, red fox, long-tailed weasel, mink, muskrat, opossum, raccoon, and striped skunk.

Brew, They're talking about keeping the furs past the date you have to sell them by. Taxi can keep them in freezer past date.

Yaz, actually after i skinned him and combed him out he looks pretty normal. I think from washing him in the creek i just had alot of his fur going the other way and really emphasized it. He was a lot lighter than most though. May try washing him good too.

I thought that was done though a signed form ... confused

*Possession of Hides/Carcasses

It is illegal to possess the untanned hides or unprocessed carcasses of furbearers, except for coyotes, after May 15 of the year the hunting or trapping season ended or after June 15 if you submit a signed form to the DNR by May 15 of the number of untanned hides and unprocessed carcasses still in your possession by species.

The signed form Is only a extension I believe you get a month extra. With the taxi license it allows you to keep them as long as you would like as long as they are all tagged and such in a logbook

That is correct Brew. For the individual TRAPPER However:

For instance: As a licensed taxidermist, you bring me a coyote or coon or whatever to mount or tan. I skin it, and stick it in my freezer to mount. There is NO rule that says I have to mount that coyote, have it tanned by May/June of that year. I have it tagged and logged in my "book" properly, as the rule requires. That would be NO different than me, as a trapper with a taxidermy license, having my own coyote in my freezer past that date….as long as it is tagged and logged as required by the taxidermy rule. Who is to say I am not going to get those hides tanned either by myself or a professional tannery to sell later????

I got yeah...
Personally, I think it would be a pain for no more benefit than you would/could get. A person would still have to maintain records and submit reports to be in compliance with the taxidermy permit.

Agreed. And be subject to unannounced ICO visits at any time to review your paper work. If you are not doing taxidermy work, when mess with this hassle?

The reason I am getting it is I have started a tanning business and this allows me to tan outside of season. Its no extra paper work than what I already have to keep. Its just a added perk to be able to hold furs over. Honestly all my furs will more than likely be tanned and sold.

I understand that. I do it anyway. So, it would not be that big of a deal for me. Its a $15.00 license too. And, its a gamble on the prices being better the next year, or it would be a waste of time and $$. Just threw it out there as an option.

You are correct Gilley!!!! Thanks for the prod!!!! I'm going to wax coyote traps, and work on snares this week and over the holidays. Just been covered up too much to commit to it. Plus……..I may slip out a time or two and hunt a slick head with the bow. Like to see the ground freeze up a little too…

BTW- that is a NICE colored coon!

A local farmer let me start trapping his place about 3 days ago and so far I've caught a opossum and raccoon and have had a yote slip out of a trap.

Well…..Looking at the extended forecast, it appears the bottom is suppose to drop out of the temps by mid next week. I guess I better get my trapping supplies in order. laugh It's actually what I've been waiting for.

Way to go Magnum!

Upcoming weather should be great for trapping. The only downside would be that if we get any snow cover, it'll keep the raccoons from moving much.

That spot under an old crab-apple tree has always been good. That's the 3rd one caught there this year.

12/25 check, running a total of 8 traps now. Need some cold weather, working in this mud is getting old.

I had my golden retriever with me when checking the traps this morning, I reset the first trap then within 2 minutes she went sniffing around over there and stepped in it. Turned her loose and then reset a second time =)

That boar coon is ancient! All of his teeth are rotted out...
