Thanks for your patience on us getting the deer report out. This was primarily the job of the Assistant Deer Biologist, but she left DNR a few years ago and we have not had one since. We had been slowly working on this report over time and one of my part-time technicians was finally able to get it over the finish line today.
The 2021 report can be found here -
www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/wi...tailed-deer/deer-management-and-reports/ near the bottom of this page.
We have already started working on getting the 2022 Deer Data into the on-line data dashboard, and we have also started working on the 2022 White-tailed Deer Management Report. This one should be out in a more normal time frame (typically sometime between July and August) since we have recently hired another Deer Research Biologist for the Deer Program.
Zack Delisle is a recent Purdue graduate who did his Ph.D. working on methods to estimate deer densities in Indiana. He is bringing that extensive knowledge to the Deer Program and will be working on creating population estimates so that we can better manage our deer herd. Zack will primarily work on the population ecology of deer and also on specific research projects (such as evaluating the effects of EHD, evaluating the deer reduction zone corridors, factors related to deer vehicle collisions, and other interesting topics), whereas I tend to focus on policy-related issues, the sociological side of deer and deer hunting, and on maintaining an overall vision for the deer program.
I will let y’all know when the 2022 data from the Deer Management Survey is posted on-line.
Cheers,
joe
