December 1st was rainy, windy and foggy near Kingsbury Wildlife area. I was hunting property next door to Kingsbury. The last 2 years have been really testing my patience as far as deer hunting goes. A few does, fawns and young bucks. Nary a 2 and 1/2 to talk about. Decided to give it another try, rain and wind be damned, thunder also I might add. About 3:45 a doe comes wandering into a picked cornfield and disappears behind a few rows of standing corn. 5 minutes later this brute comes to the same location. I know I’ve got about an hour of hunting time left and hopefully he will present a shot. Several minutes later he walks out of the standing corn and walks to 75 yards. A loud grunt by me stopped him and my 243 rifle did the rest. He went about 50 yards, stopped, did one last jitterbug and went down. I’ve taken a lot of bucks in my days but I felt like a kid again after this one. He will be scored in early February and hopefully he’ll make the HRB.

Finally got him scored by John Bogucki from North Liberty. He had a total gross of antler of 147 1/8 inches. Unfortunately with deductions he just missed the book for typical. He’s a great buck but being an 8 point frame, it takes something pretty special to make the book. I’m still very much a proud “papa”.
