What are some of the better air rifles for small game hunting (mainly squirrels)??

I don't want to break the bank for one either... but one that is pretty accurate and fairly quiet.

Would like feedback from peeps that have owned one/some.

Thanks

Never owned one I wanted to hunt with...

Not sure most air rifles can "out perform" most .22 rifles @ 50 yards or consistently shoot a five shot group @ 100 yards that can be covered with a quarter.

That's not the performance I'm looking for, nor expect... I'm not looking for one that out performs a .22, I have a 17HMR for that! wink
Again, I'm looking for HELP and feedback, not a link on where to buy from.

Ask JimH. He is the man with his air gunning. I think he is on Indiana Hunting and Fishing FB page.

If quiet is what you want, check out the whisper series they sell. Mine is not this model and loud. Very accurate though and one pump to **** it.

Like most things, you get what you pay for... I am pleased with the quality of mine for the $150 ish I paid for it. Lots of more powerful ones with more bells and whistles and speed. Sky is the limit on price...

Bo I think you made the right choice with the Gamo whisper. Like 76chevy they are quiet.

I wish I had chose on of those when I bought mine.I was looking more for speed, I had purchased the Ruger Air Magnum, man is that thing loud and its like 76chevy its shoots in the 1300's with ease.
Over the years I have had a few
[Linked Image]
The rifle at the top was my first pellet rifle that my uncle gave me some where around 1974, it is a Slavia 618 177cal
The next one is also a Slavia 622 22cal
Then I have 3 Crossman 760's, one of them is the first pellet rifle that I purchased myself in 1976, I have it disassembled reworking it.
The orange one is some Chinese model that I picked up at a garage sale for 5$
Then the bottom one is the Ruger Air Mag

Nice collection G!!
I have an OLD one that I wish you would fix for me! smile

I watched a BUNCH of videos on the 1300fps Bone Collector Bull Whisper last night... saw guys killing turkeys, coyotes, even a wild HOG!! Guys shooting targets ranged out to 100yds!!!

If you read all the reviews on Gamo's site, and watch all the vids that I saw...... YOU'D BUY ONE! laugh

Never mind I found the info...
Platinum Ballistic Alloy PBA up to 1300 fps or 1000 fps with standard lead. Interesting!

Hey Bryan, here is some feedback for ya!

I just got done putting minimun 50 shots through it this evening.... and it is AWESOME man!

1300fps Gamo Bone Collector Bull Whisper .177

[Linked Image]

This was sighting in with Gamo Rockets... Shooting @ 25yds, was low and right to start. Took a few small scope adjustments to get a feel for how much to adjust... then it was LIGHTS OUT!
Apprx 2" circle target

[Linked Image]

This is backed out to 45yds (to my back fence)... without making any adjustment at all!

[Linked Image]

I ran out of light to fine tune anymore, or go back any further to see how flat she'll hold on. But I am very pleased with results thus far!! smile

Just saw this thread, don't stop by much.Having owned RWS and Beeman "springers",I will say don't bother and just dive in and get a .25 Benjamin Marauder.Going to cost 500 for the gun,200 for the pump,+whatever scope you choose. With little or no wind I can shoot 1/2" or less groups at 50 yards-at 25 yards you can hit a .22 rf empty case every time.Basically hits like a .22 short h.p.,but is far quieter, way more accurate and safer, due to the fatter pellet slowing down sooner.Mine shoots 26 gr. pellets@ 850 fps.I own 20+ great rf rifles, and this is the most fun starling/squirrel gun yet!

The Platinums do NOT shoot with consistent accuracy out of my gun!
The Rockets shoot very consistent but with slower speeds (heavy). The Red Fires shoot really good at 30yds... but haven't backed out the yardage on those yet (haven't had the time). I'm hoping they will hold true at longer ydg.... because they are middle of the road on weight! They also have the polymer tips and best suited for hunting game.

I love it! I've tried 5 diff ammo thru it. I've only found one that doesn't hold a pattern very well. Key is finding the ammo in a weight range you want to shoot/use, sight it in for that weight/ammo.... and buy yourself a well stocked supply of it so ya don't have to hunt for it later.

It is a fine shooter, and tons of fun! I definitely recommend it.
Gamo tells ya to put at least 100 rounds through it for break-in.... this is important before fine-tune sighting! But mine does hold very tight groups, and I am very pleased with it!

I have two Gamo air rifles and they both are ok except that the Gamo Scopes are JUNK. They won't hold up to the extreme shock waves that a springer (Even EGT) produce and the reticles (cross hairs) will fall apart and become inaccurate and non adjustable after a while. I have the Gamo Whisper Fusion Elite and the Gamo Bone Collector. If you watch the stores you will notice that Gamo comes out with a new version of the old air rifles all the time. They have so many models that you can't shake a stick at them. I guess they figure that when people find out that they don't work they think that changing the name and adding this or that will fool more people. Now the gun themselves work fine. I'd bet that they work with manual sights OK.

And when they are new and the scope has not fallen apart yet then they shot pretty true and accurate. But I've had three Gamo Scopes crap out on me now. I going to try a Walther's Scope and if that one falls apart I'll go buy a Leapers scope as they are said to be built to withstand the shock of the IGT and springer type air rifles. The thing is with the IGT and Springer guns is that there is a forward and then a back wards shock wave that tends to destroy cheap scopes.

I have shot a lot of squirrels when the Gamo Bone Collector was new. I dispatched lots of fox squirrels in my back yard that were raiding my bird feeders. It was deadly out to about 40 yards if you sighted it in for that distance.

But one word of advise. If you want it to be quiet shoot the heavier and slower lead pellets. 0.17 caliber is what I shoot. The alloy pellets are fast and loud and less accurate IMHO. I've tested them and they tend to fly every which way at an distance over 40 yards. They are less precise and squirrely. Sorry for the pun. Anything that's over 1300 fps is going to make a loud crack that will sound like a 22 short rim fire rifle going off. If you keep the speed below the speed of sound there will be no Loud Crack Sounds.

The problem is that most of the Gamo Air rifles come with a Gamo Scope on them or in the box. And you must use a torque wrench to mount the screws for the scope mounts and the scope rings or the threads will strip if you over torque them. They are not the best metal in the world. I also used Blue Loc tite on the threads when I set them in the place and torqued them down. About 20 ft pounds of torque is required for the scope ring screws. The scope stop is critical too. I've had Gamo Scopes go backwards on the rifle receiver with each shot until the back rings were off the back of the receiver. So I installed another separate scope stop on the receiver. You can buy those from the Gamo online store separately. They have a hole on the top of the receiver that accepts the set bolt on the scope stops and the scope stops that's built into the scope mounts and or rings.
