For those of you that shoot one, what's the recoil compare too? I've shot them in 357 but going to get one bigger

.410 I guess, not much recoil at all.

Very little recoil but is pretty loud.

I wasn't figuring on it being much more but this is for my fiancé that has never shot a gun before, just don't want it to scare her off

very light recoil. I find it very comfortable to shoot.

My 12 year old has been shooting it for 5 years and has killed 5 bucks! So it does pack a punch but not on the re-coil. He shoots it just fine.

If you stick with a standard load they are very comfortable for a youth or woman. If you go with a hot load like pierce ammuntion or ted Nugent that's deferent. Your looking at a 20ga equivalent recoil. My daughter noticed a huge difference there and didn't like it. Payton is a small framed girl though.

Got a CVA Scout in .44 Mag. last fall for my daughter.... I'd say it kicks a little less than a 20 gauge shot load, or a little harder than a .410 shot load.... I would also guess that the recoil is a little less with the H-R, as the H-R is quite a bit heavier. I paid a little extra to loose the weight.

If she finds it a bit intimidating, you could always add a quality recoil pad (like a limbsaver) and let her start with .44 special loads and work her way up.

+1 and add good hearing protection for young or new shooters. Sometimes the loud bang scares them and creates bad flinching.

We got ours at Cabin Fever Guns and Ammo, in Salem Indiana. We live in Corydon, and we had intended to buy it at Gun World, but the ones they got last fall, they sold in less than a week and couldent get anymore before season came in....So I got on the phone, and found one....Salem was the closest. Gun World got more this fall, but I have no idea if they have any of them left..... We paid about $350.00 for the gun and another $100 for the scope on it....We are VERY pleased with it.(See thread on this site titled "Keara's first deer"). Anyhow, there is a better deal on them this year... CVA updated the break-action on the Scout, its now the "Scout v2", and it now only comes in stainless... but they also started making the CVA "Hunter". The Hunter is a Blue/Synthetic version only, the barrell is not fluted, and it has the break-action design from the first Scouts, but, you can get it in a combo, with scope and a gun case included. Gun World had the combo in October for around $350.00.....You can compare the Scout vs. the Hunter here:

When comparing rifle rounds and shotguns, remember that typically, shotgun shells are loaded with very fast powders which tend go give more of a "pop" recoil. Rifles with slow burning powder (Hodgon H110) being a personal favorite if you are a handloader) give more of a "shove" which reduces "perceived" recoil. I had an old break open 12 gauge that was nothing but a pure punisher. On the other hand, it took three rounds of a 375 H&H rifle before I had to call it quits. But all three of those rounds felt like a big shove that through both shoulders back.

I think the 44 is a much better choice. If you want to start out easy, find the lightest bullet you can in 44 special.
