A good deer cart and/or a 4-wheeler are worth their weight in gold!

Quit using that "death trap", and put up some ladder stands Dale!!! laugh As I get older, I am getting pretty partial to ground blinds. I'll ONLY use a climber if I have to make a switch to an area quick!

Having a strong teenage son that loves the outdoors/hunting and he having some good strong buddies is making deer drags much more enjoyable now! LOL smile but seriously it is nice that he can help his old dad with those long and tough drags when needed! But like 76 mentioned a good 4- wheeler and deer cart are worth their weight in gold too. smile

LOL...I drove 20 miles home to get my 4 wheeler and 20 miles back to woods to drag my buck out. It would have been about a 1/4 mile drag for me and hunt buddy but we opted to go get 4 wheeler. Guess we get smarter as we age. laugh

when I was young, I never dreamed of needing a 4 wheeler to get a deer out, now, can't imagine not having one sooner and will never do without one again.

Of course I will shoot a good buck any time, but I have some restrictions on when I shoot does.

They cannot be heading or pointing downhill.
They cannot be walking in the opposite direction of my truck.
It can't be within 20 minutes of dark.

I find that my harvests are much more enjoyable when the deer are decent enough to meet these requirements.

I know I have come home from Wyoming on several occasions without a deer. Simply due to the fact I wasn't going to drag one up and out of a canyon. I just let them pass. It would have to have been a REALLY good deer for me to shoot one down in there!!! laugh

I found I wasn't as young as I thought with the last buck I shot. The hunt was only about 20 min. but it took me about hour or more to drag it 400 yds. through the thick woods.
I gave up using my climber when me knees & hips started screaming in pain last time I used it. I sold it & bought a small ladder stand.

Parrot Head,

The Remington is gone. I haven't hunted with it for 4 or 5 years. It was just sitting in the safe. A guy I work with is just starting into deer hunting. I traded it to him last week for a pistol. I'll stick with my long bow for late season. Good Luck!

I've packed many caribou across mountainous tundra. Those caribou make our deer seem small. I had my knee surgically repaired this spring. I tore parts of it slipping on the wet tundra while coming down a mountain. Maybe I'm a slow learner but I shoot first and figure out how to get them back second. I plan to use that approach as long as the good Lord lets me.

The age of 50 seems to be magical. I'm sure it's different for everyone, but after 50 the body starts fighting against you. There are places that I don't duck hunt anymore because its just too dang much at 60 years old. And, I don't break ice anymore. I could go on with examples. At this age, I think first and set up and shoot second.

Packing caribou very far across the tundra would make a thirty something feel old. Absolutely the toughest walking there is...even without a load on your back. [/b]
Done that one!!!! Lucky we only had about 1/2 mostly down hill to the boat! That stuff is like walking on a sponge that grabs your feet. It doesn't matter where you are at, in the bottoms, on top of a hill, or on the side of a hill.

My deer cart goes in the truck starting October 1st and doesn't come out until season ends. There are some things that a hunter can't do without and some form of transport is one of them. To me a cart is like a broadhead on an arrow. you got to have one.

Over the last 20yrs I've redesigned and rebuilt my carts as I've seen where improvement can be made. I've now got a cart that has lasted me 15yrs and probably will until I quit. I wouldn't give it up for anything. It's hauled a ton of deer that's for sure between me, friends and family.
