November 16, 2013 will go down as the best day I have ever had while hunting. Opening morning at 7:30 my son Gaston and I had a doe and 2 small bucks at about 115 yards, but no shot option with trees in the way. We watched them for 30 minutes hoping one of the smaller bucks would come to within 100 yards so he could get a shot. He harvested a doe last year and this year during the Youth Season, but he really wanted a buck. The doe crossed a creek, which put her at 90 yards. She stood there for a few minutes and I was sure that one of the bucks would cross as well and offer a shot. Then we got a big surprise. This big fella had been laying on the creek bed all the time and got up to pursue the doe and was at 90 yards broadside. I told my son to hold a little high on the shoulder and squeeze the trigger. The Circut Judge .45 Long Colt did not dissapoint. The shot connected and we actually heard a "Thump" sound when the round hit. He ran back into the creek and piled up on the other side. We waited about 30 minutes, watching all the while and he never moved. We went to him, high fived, hugged, shed a few tears, thanked God, then started with the photos and phone calls. Gaston is so happy to have a buck and clearly knows how special this one is. It was the best day I have ever had in the field, and certainly his too. Two different friends of mine have green scored this buck at 160 gross. I will have it officially scored when it's dry. Either way, my 9 year old has now taken a deer bigger than Dad. I'll see if I can remedy that this weekend! Thanks for looking.
