76- to be honest, I bought an english pointer which is about third in the list of best deer tracking dogs. The lineage for pointers in general came from bloodhounds, greyhounds, italian pointers, and bulldogs and sure others that were crossed to become what we think to be a 'bird-dog'. They were bred having the best nose(s) and also strength in field.
When I work her, I have a harness on her. That harness means to her that it is time to track deer (not birds, rabbits, or other critters). I am teaching her to track more on blood- not dead deer/gland secretions etc... Therefore, not every dog is equal in the type of track. If the deer is not secreting any blood at all.. it is a difficult track at times. I can move her in the future to track more on hoof/specific deer ID, but that will take more experience.
The benefit is that i use her as well for quail hunting. HOWEVER, being that we live in Indiana- I see more injured deer than quail (at this time)..
