I normally wait until after deer season. This deer season has been dismal at best for me. Absolutely no deer. I refuse to kill one of the 3 remaining does, or one of the 3 small bucks that I have seen. Five years ago when I got after the coyotes so hard, was because we had problems with them in the cattle. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I could not trap for very long last season, and only caught four in a couple weeks before I pulled them. Well…..they are back with a vengeance. They are running my calves in the barn lot behind the house at the farm. Calves have gotten out by running through and over the fence twice in two nights. Only dogs or coyotes would do this. Checked a trail camera, and in the last 5 days, had 31 pics of multiple coyotes all times of the day and night. Time to forget deer hunting for a couple weeks and take care of business. Actually saw this one today at 60 yards going back to check the cam……..no gun of course...

I'm in the same boat Yaz. You give 'em any time off and they tend to prosper. The dogs have taken over my place and I only laid out for one year. Time to get that corrected!

Good catches everyone! I havent set any snares or traps yet. Back issues make it kind of hard to get down and back up to set a trap...old age thing.... Besides we didnt see or hear any yotes during the gun season which is very unusual. Guys, keep after them fawn killers....thinning yotes out does make a difference in your local deer population. h.h.

Funnel spots like that fence corner are sweet. And they can't tear up your spot like they do to a brush funnel.

Stick, I know it seems like a lot of trouble, but I'm going to try something when I get time later on. On the sets that get tore up so bad, I'm going to set them up different…….just to see if it works. I've made some VERY short snares out of good pieces of cable from used ones. They are only big enough for the loop, and about 6" of lead. I'm going to attach my swivel on the snare to a one way slide, and put it on a 10' 1/8" runner cable out to a "kill pole". When the coyote gets caught, hopefully he will go the path of least resistance to the pole, and wrap up there, and not disturb the set as much. Might be a time saver.

I have around 14 sets out. I have had the same dirthole on one set dug out twice without the coyote tripping the trap. Re set it yesterday. As far as I know the bait and lure and urine I applied to my sets on Saturday and Sunday should be alright even with the precipitation we have gotten.

You would be just wasting bait, lure, and urine right now Magnum. This light rain and drizzle won't wash the scent out. As warm as it is, a little goes a long way. However, with the temps dropping, and the rain drying up today, it may not be a bad idea to spritz stuff up a little tomorrow. The sets won't need much though.

Yaz depending on how hard the dirt is I will uncover the pans on the trap and recover with a light covering of light dirt just so i feel comfortable lol. Ill probably re bait re lure and re urine everything. It looks like we have a lull coming up of some nice weather

Congrats to all you fur catchers....nice job! Snow coming in this weekend means I will set snares next week. Snow on the ground lets you zero in where the yotes move thru your area. I blew a chance at one the other morning while deer hunting. The dog was stopped, looking straight towards me at 100 yards, I waited for it to turn because of low light and when it did turn, it shot into the brush. Stupid, stupid mistake of waiting too long. It wont happen again. h.h.

Who's still trapping? My catches have been coming on a pitiful slow trickle! But still getting a few coyotes in snares.

I pulled all my k9 sets a couple weeks ago. Waiting for it to dry up and get colder and will be back at it. Been beaver trapping instead.
