I'll have to go back and check my records, but if memory serves me right, in the long run, its is usually 50/50 for me. Maybe a slight edge for the females overall. I do know every year, I catch mostly females early, then the males later in the season. I'm talking late january into March for the males. I assume that has to do with the breeding season, and young males without a mate out looking. Maybe its just the area I trap too…...

Originally posted by Gilley: I had another one, pulled up on atv and as I was getting off to take a pic before I shot him he pulled his leg out and ran off. All I had was my little .22 pistol so I had to just watch him run off. I had him in a bridger dogless offset. I'm starting to lose faith in the offset traps. Have had a couple since I got them get out. Anyone else have this problem?? Its not the trap Gilley. You just didn't have him where it needed to be. I have had it happen once or twice, where I had one just enough to get a light catch circle, and nothing there when I got there. Since I don't know how you are setting, a couple potential causes are: Too light of a pan tension. They have not committed their weight before the trap fires. Too much cover on the trap, or the trap too deep in the trap bed. To go along with that, pan covers must stay INSIDE the jaws of the trap, or the covering stays in the pan cover, and gets folded up inside the jaws, not letting them close all the way. Generally when that happens, you get an immediate pull out. Not being careful enough, and letting pebbles and/or small clods over the top of the trap. They can get caught between the jaws, not letting them close all the way. AND, sometimes chit just happens, and you can't get them all!!!! Keep up the good work, and posting pics!!!! But its not the offset jaws.

Originally posted by Gilley: Yaz, I have never used pan covers and haven't had to many problems without using them. Maybe I'll start using some and see if that makes a difference. I do remember thinking when I made the set that I thought I was a little deeper than usual, that could have been it. Thanks for the advice. Coyotes are definitely crafty little fellars. I pulled my traps today since everything is gonna freeze this week, probably wait til next weekend and get them back out. Gilley, I started using the polyfill (Pillow stuffing) under my trap pans this yr and it has been working well for me. I know some use was paper and some use stiff screen wire.

Cross staking or earth anchors of some sort (I make my own pogo style) are mandatory on votes. Tough tough critters.

Originally posted by ParkerBow: Here's the thing about me trapping coyotes. I mostly trap along my land behind the house where I can easily check the traps daily with my 4-Wheeler. I just trap using snares along an old fenceline section and some coilsprings along the crop field, so I am only trapping a small section probably 500 yrds long. This is my 6th yr trapping back there and I have caught 69 coyotes to date in this small area. Unreal if you think about it. It would be a full time job PB to keep them at bay. In the 3 years that I have hit them hard, I've caught 67!!!! 3/4 of those off of one 160 acre part of the farm. The others all within a mile of there.
