Decided to not set coon traps these days off and try to put a little meat in the freezer. I knew going into today that I was shooting the first legal deer to walk by. It took till 9:00am when this young guy walked in front of me. Took till noon to get him out and hung up so I was a little late on getting to my 4 coyote sets I had out. Had not been touched in 9 days and I walk up to a double. Was not able to get pictures due to one of them being a toe catch and I was a little nervous about him getting away. Here is a tailgate shot though. Must say it was a pretty good day. Think I will take a nap now.

Whoa!! I miss a few days, and you guys are really putting the smack down on the fur!!! Congrats to all! Sticksender, I don't know if it is just the angle of the pictures, but it always looks like you are snagging those yaps out of thin air!!! Tony, glad you got that first one. Congrats! I knew it wouldn't take long. Just wait till walk up on one and it starts growling, challenge barking, and howling at you!!! It'll make the hair stand up on the back of your neck!!! Bean…….NOW THAT'S A BEAV!!!!!!! I've killed deer smaller than that!!!! Looks like you had an eventful day bassbum! Nice buck and dogs! I'll second that nap!!! I'll be getting my coyote stuff ready in the next two weeks. Might set just a couple coon, and mink sets. But thats going to be about it for me. I did notice a couple rat huts on the pond this week. I may have to make a set or two for those before it freezes over.

and that's the 'art' of trapping! Would love to see your pics of your snare setups. I would like to get better at snaring them... Nice catch....I think....lol. Could not handle taking it easy today. Made 5 yote sets and threw in 4 colony traps to see if there are any rats in this area.

Chevy here's a pic. The snare loop is outlined in photoshop red. This is a 5-foot cable snare anchored to the pine at left with a 4-foot extension cable connected by a quick loop for fast change-out of the snare after a catch. Roughly a 10-11 inch snare loop elevated 11-12 inches off the ground. All the vertical "brush" between the two Pines is added by me. Basically it's twigs trimmed off nearby hardwood shrubs. I want a thin screen, enough to deter the dogs from walking around the snare, but thin enough so they can still see through and won't sense anything is out of place. Just enough brush to route them directly into the loop. I don't try to make the dogs go places they don't normally go. I find general areas they have a tendency to pass through, then add the brush clippings to boost the odds their head finds the loop. Snares are cheap so find every spot imaginable they might walk through and put a snare there. You'll eventually figure out the best spots and then you won't need as many snares. A lot of time you need to stand way back and look over an area from a distance to identify potential travel corridors. Then squat down low to get a Coyote's-eye view so-to speak. Also some fresh snow will tell you a lot. I never miss a chance to walk the farm a day or two after a snowfall for sign.
