Nice going 76. Creek, woods or field sets? Just curious. Hope you didn't lose any traps PSE.

i have one thats probably donated to the creek. a 110 that was just sticked down. the rest have been recovered.

they were caught in DP traps along a creek bank on trails leading from den trees up to a cornfield.

What a mess out there! I could only see one of my traps today. It was a good day to spend in the fur shed getting stuff ready for pickup on January 4'th. I hadn't boarded a beaver in a lot of years. I forgot what a PIA they are to get scraped and pinned down. At least Dad got a good laugh out of it!

Well, I said I was ready to skin something. Guess I should have been more specific because all I had was two Grinners waiting on me this morning in the rain and mud.

Thanks for the link Chevy. Luckily I pulled all my traps yesterday since the heavy rain was coming in and Christmas is coming. I probably will wait until after Christmas to re-set. Coons breed in january right? Where do you guys usually set during the rut phase for coons? Alongs creeks or along fields or woods?

nice going Chevy and Yaz. Got all mine pulled til after Xmas too. Yea, I was also wondering what the best coon sets were going to be in Jan? Or do you do anything different?

I set closer to den trees and use this coon gland lure near sets.

I am also setting UNDER bridges now where they are protected from weather.

It is all about timing also...having those sets out and working the first warm night after a big cold period when the boars move well.

Barns, and woods with lots of den trees. They will be checking out every place a sow could be holed up here in a few week.

I just drove back to Indi from Madison and south of Indianapolis is an interesting place when you look out across the fields, even at night. Looks kind of like a continuous lake. No turkeys this afternoon but a red fox came out right at last light and barked at the SUV from about 25 yards while we were sitting in the SUV getting ready to leave. The wife thought it was one of the coolest things she's seen in the outdoors. Good luck with the creek Yaz because my cell phone kept giving alerts about flooding all the way home.

Awwww CRAP! Just went to HTS to pick up a few little things to get ready for round #2 of trapping…..ended up with more daggers, and a couple MB 650 OS with the spring levers! I can already tell I'm going to like them…..I'm worse than a kid in a candy store in that place!!!! :rolleyes:

IMHO the MB 650 OS Is the best coyote trap on the market, I have never had a pull out with one.

Ok, I ordered me some glycerine to mix with my baits to try and keep them from freezing. Do you guys use this and if so how much do you mix with your bait?

i dont use it but would also be interested in knowing more. seems like once bait freezes it has no smell. went out today and found some heavy coon traveled areas and couple beaver runs went ahead and set some traps out. hope it pays off

Got a handful of DP's from the wife and kids. Do you guys treat (dye, wax, boil in baking soda, etc.) your new DP's before you put them in a set? With the lack of deer I have seen this year, I am going to skip the doe hunt and make my first sets, tomorrow.

Just spray paint them if you want or you can just set them!

I've got some I've dyed in logwood like I do my other traps. I also have some i've painted white. They say the white paint makes them more visible to the coons. Probably so, but I don't see much difference. I've used golf balls, white cups, or even white plastic grocery sacks wrapped around them for the visibility factor. Good luck!

I would put something over them due to mice. As I played around w/ them this season I have found the mice will clean you out pretty quick, plus it keeps things dry. Dry = less freezing.

I have not treated mine this year but may before next season. As all trapping: location location location.

I have a dozen new ones I have been using since november. The oil is off of them now and they are lightly rusted. I will paint them before I put them away for the year. In the past I used rustoleum rusty metal spray paint.

It is more to keep the rust under control, the first coon you catch will remove most of the paint or dip.

Spray paint, logwood dye, speed dip all work well.

I also got some of them from my parents and my inlaws so Im ready to get em set out. Also got a few 220s. Can say I have no idea how to set em(220s) but gonna be watching some videos today!!

youtube can be your best friend. i typically use my 220s in bucket sets but you can also blind set them on trails. the only thing you have to do is make sure there are no dogs in the area. these are very effective traps they are also deadly.

Yeah Ive got the buckets already, been watching you tube all morning. There shouldnt be any dogs anywhere near where Im setting them, so hopefully that isnt an issue.

Most of my buckets are going to barn hay mounds now. Shouldn't have to worry about by-catch there.

Well I got my DP's out today. We will see how I did in the morning, before work. Bought some Duke 1 1/2's today. Guess I will throw another log in the stove and get to working on the new traps.

Can't help you with that. I have never used it. I have wondered about its use for keeping bait from freezing.

Well when it comes I'll try it and let you know how it works Yaz. Put 6 DP's out last night but nothing today. Hoping for some good luck tomorrow with this weather.

I'm with Gilley....I made my DP sets yesterday, couldn't hardly sleep thinking about checking them this morning, but no luck.....yet. Its almost 40 degrees up here until, Sunday. I'm sure they will be on the move tonight.

Coon moved well last night and are moving again tonight.

Caught 1 big boar coon today and can't get the darn computer to download my cell phone pic. Dang technology. I also just got permission to trap a 140 acre property. It has a big creek, cornfields, pasture and woods. going to set it Saturday and get out as many traps as I can.

Finally got it to work.

I caught a big boar this morning, neck was fine.

He was a nice ugly yellow though =)
