I had 12 DP's and 5 - 220's set but caught nothing. Another lesson learned as I rushed to get the last 220 set right at dark, I apparently forgot to take the safety hooks off. Now, I'll give you one chance to guess which trap was the only one to see some action.

I had one runnimg around this week in the house. He couldnt find anything to eat, so he left!!!!

Nadda for me again tonight too Haymaker. Not taking the safeties off the trap isnt as bad as setting up a trail camera, and coming back 3 weeks later only to find you didnt flip it on before you closed it up!!!! :rolleyes: .

Last year a skunk tripped my 220 and either I forgot to take one safety off or the skunk digging under the fence flipped it back on but, only one side went off and the skunk was alive. He was pinned front and back and couldn't fire off his stink bomb. I shot him in the head without any spray. I much prefer them to be dead in a trap! ......LOL h.h.

Big female coon today and a grinner. Coyote set was tripped w/yote tracks around it. Set a new farm today that has a muddy path going through it. Coon tracks all over.

Okay - since it was really windy and cold, Luke decided not to hunt but put out more traps. We finally can hit our creek sine the water has leveled out and no rain for a while.

Yaz - I got some of those concrete tiles about 4"-5" in diameter and about a foot or so long. We built your little tunnel idea using those as supports. Put the coni's in front of them. Used canned muskrat as bait w/ mink lure on the top of tile.

This is our first attempt to trap the creek. It should be interesting.

Another rabbit (which is skinned and in the fridge) and another cat. I am very good at catching what I don't want to.

Been slooowwww. But, if I can keep 1/2 dozen traps going and still catch two or three a week, thats ok with me. Caught these over the weekend. Had a trap missing yesterday. It had a coon in it, but the drag was not moved an inch. They usually move the drag up the creek a little. Little suspicious. I should have my butt kicked for not having my rifle with me today. Sat and watched a coyote feed by me about a 100 yards away as I was running traps. I could have shot him 10 times! :rolleyes: However, I watched him go through a hole under the fence that I have caught them in before. There WILL be a trap and a snare there tomorrow after I get off work!

Hope you saved the hide and innards for dirthole sets! Are you setting coyote traps in thickets or something bean?

Not set in thickets. This latest one was behind a barn w/ a mowed yard. Was a foothold set for coons. I think that makes 5 for the year. Strange.

when you guys catch a coon and he tears the area up do you move your trap or reset it right there again?

Set it again. Lot of scent and eye appeal IMO. However, I am a newbie.

Your opinions on setting for coons over thanksgiving when temps are gonna be in teens at night? Wondering if I should take the time to make some sets. Any suggestions?? Mink also been finding quite a few mink tracks lately on creek banks.

You'll have to find the open water. If there is any field tiles running, there should be open water there. They are mink magnets when there is ice on the creeks. My problem is there is still not enough water in the ground to be running out of the tiles, and the creeks have very little flow, so my sets there are freezing up early. DP's for coon along the banks. Might be able to make a few blind sets along the banks in cover for mink with 110's.

I'm sure ill find open water sorry by creek I meant river. It's sugar creek in parke co. Only prob I have is I live so far away I can only let my traps sit while I'm there and it's usually only 2 days at a time. Next year I think I'm taking 2 weeks off just to hunt and trap but for now it's 2 days at a time.

If you can make up some bucket sets for coon, they are easy and quick too. Two days does make it tough to fine tune sets.

That said, I am setting all my traps today to run this week. With the time off and time spent with the kids it will be a good week even if I don't catch much.

I would want those traps set the first WARM night we have, the coon will really run then.

You really should do well. I am trapping sugar creek too north of you, TONS of coon on the creek this year.

I can't catch one up in the woodlots, but have done well on the creek.

Id like to atleast catch one, Im taking my son with me to ry and fill his buck tag so hopefully we can put out few sets so I can start showing him the little bit that I do know about trapping. That way we can learn together. Either way a weekend outdorrs even in the cold beats sitting inside. I know there have been some coons caught along the creek talked to a guy who was floating the creek trapping and ran across some of his sets and he was doing well, i was looking for beaver sign and saw 5 of his sets and 3 had coon in em, but that was a few weeks ago.

Struck out 3 days in a row now. Put some new legholds down by the creek for coon and put out 3 dirt hole sets and another snare for the dogs. My DP's are all along a woodlot about 200 yds from the creek. Gonna try and move them down by the creek tomorrow.

Coon have been moving good despite the cold. Treeing them every night. I had one of my dogs get caught in a leg hold trap last night in the middle of a patch woods. First time that has ever happened. Trap was set without permission and had no ID tag. Fortunate for my trusty Garmin and no major injury to the dog. High coon prices will bring the amateurs out of the woodwork like crazy.

How do know this guy was a "amateur" that set the trap???

Because wether you are a fishermen, hunter, trapper, etc and you knowingly break the law, you are an amateur in my book.

If it stays cold like this, running water will be a good bet for finding coons. It seems like each year there is about a two week lull after Thanksgiving. Maybe resting up for the rut.

Thank you. All of my traps are within about 10 feet of running water. I caught a few up in the woods so far but they seem to be running the creeks and open water now.

I use only dog proof style coon traps, largely to to avoid unfortunate situations like you ran into with this trespasser.

The last thing I want to do is catch and potentially injure someone's dog.

Had 1 dirt hole set off, missed whatever it was. Ground's to hard to see any tracks. 0 on coon traps

2 coons today, a pull out on a coyote trap, a coni and bridger tripped. Had an active night. Everything reset and ready for tomorrow.
