I've got a handful set, just trying to knock the rust off and help a friend out with some night time bandits.

Dang nice haul there chevy. Makes me want to give up this deer hunting crap and start trapping. What are you using for bait in your dog proofs?

thanks.

I use a homemade mix of catfish floating food pellets, feed molasses, and cherry jello powder. I store it in an old wide mouth gallon container and it works pretty well.

I also use a trailing scent of canola oil, fish oil with some HTS #101 coon lure.

it all depends on the sign. On opening day this year I put 7 traps around a well used den entrance, had 7 coon the following morning.

I am sure I missed coon by not having an open trap for them when all 7 got filled.

I generally will set no less than 3 DP traps in one location.

This early in the season, you often get whole family groups still running together. If you nab one, the rest hang around to see what is going one. I generally put two out. But, I usually mix mine up. Like a steel trap, and a DP, or a snare, and a bucket set...etc.

BTW Chevy..You need to figure out a different dispatch method. Your going to burn through a box of .22 shells in a hurry!!! As expensive and hard to find as those are, you my be in trouble before the season is over. laugh

Well, with TRYING to finish running corn, and TRYING to squeeze out a couple of hours of deer hunting, I did manage to put out 1/2 dozen sets. I did make two cubby, mink sets out of that 1/2 doz. I ended up catching a couple locals that were raiding the farm dumpster!

This was a big ole boy. over 20 lbs. He'd been living good off the corn, and table scraps this summer!!! laugh A snare under the fence nabbed his butt!!

I don't sell them green, I get them finished and ship to NAFA.

I think I get the best prices there.

I skin them all out and freeze the pelts, then get them to a guy who finishes them for me. He does a great job. I have had several select quality pelts the last 2 years.

That's right - you have already told me that. I am going to have to sell them green to start out. Was told I wouldn't get that much for them as the first of the season is always ify on the prices.

Nice catches by the way.

Get after 'em bean!!!! I scouted a ditch that I have not been on in YEARS for some rats. It must have been dry the last couple years, as there was NO rat sign, and very little water. I did find a couple sets of mink tracks. I'll have to go back one night this week and make a couple more cubby's to put some traps in over the weekend.

thanks man.

You won't get much for them green as the fur buyer has to flesh, and finish them. You just have to pretty much take their offer

The furbuyer has to make money of them also. He may very well be finishing them and shipping them to NAFA.

You might call Charlie to see if he knows of any other options for you... Groenwold maybe?? They will buy green pelts

Checked my traps this morning. Had one pull out, 1 grinner, and this guy. Big boar weighed 25 pounds according to my scale. Caught him in a snare that was Luke's idea, so he is taking the credit for this check. I got $16 for him.

[Linked Image]

Didn't get the numbers I thought we would, but I tweaked some things. Going to put out more coyotes sets tomorrow and adding some mink as well.

wow, nice job Luke!

I set 23 DP traps today.

I also found out I could not trap on one property I was counting on, but went knocking on doors and picked up another tonight that has lots more coon sign.

Thats a big ole toon bean! Nice one. Why is it when I catch one in a snare, its wound up so tight I have to get the cuttin torch, and bolt cutters to get it out? That one is just standing there...... laugh

My father (retired and full time trapper) has been checking most of my sets this week since I haven't been getting home from work, and getting feeding done till way after dark. Guess I caught 2 today. Guess I'll have to trust him it wasn't 3! laugh He said coon movement has been off a little cause of the cold moon lit nights. Should be better by the weekend since its suppose to cloud up and rain. I need to try to get home in time to get my mink sets out in the cubby's I have made.

Good going Luke. Actually, $16 doesn't seem to bad to me for green.

I am skinning them myself when I have time. Selling them green (skinned) will put more money in your pocket. I bet the coon I got today was finished it would have been worth a lot more. This was a big coon, so I got more for it.

I am selling to a guy named John Scott here in Wayne County. Seems like a good guy and he is helping Luke and I along. Lots to learn and more to do.

Yaz - explain your cubby set to me. I am going to set pocket sets w/ footholds tomorrow since I don't have any conibears (yet)! I was told again we have a good number of mink around.
