I did try to corral them with cornstalks. tried to get them to come in from one certain way and it just happened to be from the east so they were kinda facing the wind. pulled the trap today Yaz, it was just to cold and it was froze. to much clay right in that area to get a dusting of dirt on it. I still have some snares out for now.

Not a trapped yote but still a dead one. Shot this bitch this morning about 8:30, missed one yesterday morning. Still havent put my traps or snares out but thats gonna happen real soon! h.h.

Actually I was deer hunting when this one came by this morning. She is the smallest yote I believe I ever killed. Weighed about 20 lbs or so. She had warts on her lower lip. h.h.

You done goode HH. Since she had warts on her lower lip I guess you did not bother giving her a kiss.

I ran my snare line today and i did not seen a one yote track. I guess that is really a good thing. It may be slow for me this year. I have some new properties to set so maybe i will get on a few here and there.

Two years ago I really hammered 'em on our place. 35 I think. Last year I think I only got around 10. Its nice to catch several of them. But its BETTER to not have any to catch! IMO I'll probably have to step out off the farm to catch any numbers of coyotes this year.

I had snapped trap and a fresh steaming pile at one of my sets this morning. I think the peat moss bedded trap wobbled just enough to let him see another day. I reset and bedded it more tightly

I hope to get some more sets out. Coyotes seem to be moving good around here.

I'd take those "fresh steaming piles" personal Chevy! They are letting you know what they think of your sets!!!! :p

Have any of you guys ever used 12 penny nails on the outside of the jaws to pin the trap down? I saw a guy on youtube who used 4 12penny nails to pin the trap. He pushed them down in the ground, one on each end, on the outside of both jaws. He said this would keep the trap from moving and did not effect the catching ability.


Question, Will traps that are not waxed freeze quicker than waxed traps? h.h.

Not that I can tell-frozen dirt is frozen dirt.

I paint all my land traps with rustoleum but have done the dye/wax method before also

Can't answer that question HH. I think having a powerful 4 coil trap in the ground that can break through the frozen dirt is more important. If you are bedding in peat, I can see the nail thing working. HOWEVER, I know as a farmer, I'd be PISSED If I had a flat on the tractor out in the field because of a 12 penny nail come spring!!! I can see those nails getting flipped up out of the set and being lost. The way my luck goes, I'd do it to myself!!! :rolleyes:

I promise Chevy those steaming piles were not from me. Although it seems I always get hit with the Urge when I am in the woods.

OK, I put out 6 new dirt holes today. bedded 4 with peat moss and 2 with just dirt. Covered them real light hoping not to freeze them down. See if the ones in peat make a difference. Also hung a few more snares. Went by the coon carcass, Yaz, and its still there. Guess they just didn't want it buried. Was driving down a fence line looking for holes and crossings and jumped a small buck up. Think I ruined his hiding spot.

Took the 4 wheeler back to look for coyote tracks, and get a place ready for a couple of sets. Between the 3" of fresh snow last night, and the wind, there were no coyote tracks. Thought I'd run back to the blind/plot and see if the deer have started to yard up on the place yet......................







THEY HAVE ARRIVED!!!! Trapping season is officially on HOLD until further notice!! Snow and cold, and pressure got them in there a week earlier than usual. Time to check the broad heads, and make sure they are ready again.

Tough trapping conditions! Been nice for the ground to have froze before the snow hit.

Got #5 today. That makes half of our goal for this year.

Had another #3 set off. Man I am educating the crap out of these yotes. Think I have my tension set good so not sure if I'm not getting trap set firm enough or they're just not hitting it right? AAAUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!!!

One of the reason why I like these forums is all the tip/ideas you get from others sharing their knowledge. I remade some coyote sets today using dry dirt from under a bridge. I never would have thought of that. Worked perfect.

I had to leave our "hot" set tripped yesterday due to not having anything to cover it with and of course there were a TON of coyote tracks, pee, and scat all around where we had the set. I should have put in another 1-2 but didn't have them with me. That is the job for tomorrow.
