Nice going Yaz. Interesting life the yotes lead being the hunter and the hunted.

Way to go Yaz!!!! I must have caught all the dumb ones last yr. No yotes for me "YET" And all those look like holes in dirt to me fellas. There really is no right or wrong way to do a dirt hole. You just have to feel confient in your sets and get out as many as you can for better odds. But I really don't know what I am doing half the time either.

I like to somehow corral them and make them come in a certain way. Like take a couple logs and steer them and make them stay a little longer around the trap.
They will be back, Coyote were really moving last night and this morning. Tracks all over the place when we checked our traps.
Good luck.

Good luck. I know its not very predictable. But remember one thing when setting a trap in front of a dirt hole, or scent post.......they will ALWAYS come in to the set with their nose in the wind. Our winds here are predominately W NW in the winter. So, I try to make make my sets where the trap is E SE of the hole/backing. ALso, when I have traps available, I make two sets around the expected path of travel. One set on the up wind side, and one on the down wind side. That way if they don't see the set, they will likely smell one of the two regardless of the wind direction. Use the wind as your corral.

I have seen it, but only in February with a few inches of snow and bitter temps. They came and ate on the coon carcass pile behind my house. They dragged several coon off and ate them. Food was very scarce then...now deer, beaver, or muskrat they love! Originally posted by Yaz: .... I personally have never seen a coyote eat a coon. This little bit of snow and cold don't bother coyotes any. They are not hungry yet either. As long as they can hunt mice, voles, and their favorite foods they may not touch it. It just sparked their curiosity. They were just lucky they didn't step on that trap!!!!
This IS an interesting "experiment"!!! Keep us posted daily on the activity around it.

Good advice. I so the same thing Mark June did a demo at hoosier trapper a few years ago. He mentioned always thinking of the 45 degree angle. Federal research has shown that predators tend to move into a set at a 45 degree angle most often into the wind. Put the trap in the middle and it is actually offset for them as they approach.
