I hunt a place in Tippecanoe county which got hit bad with EHD a while back, chose not to hunt it that year at all. Would be good to see real time data of how much this county harvest went down to confirm what I saw on the ground. Funny that KY leads the way on this, maybe in 5-10 years we will be where KY DNR is today =) Why not have county/region specific deer quotas and track this this online? We do this now with our river otter season (I know I checked one in yesterday) They do this with big game in the western states so we know it can be done and has worked for years in places like Colorado. Once again IN trails the pack in game management. They are not far off - from a website perspective (my job), a few auto-generated graphs for buck/doe percentages as well can be programmed in a couple hours. Hopefully they will continue to upgrade.
It would be great if Indiana made those raw statistics available for people like me so we could run those numbers and graphs to create useful info quicker than the DNR So if you had all the info you wanted real time how would that affect your or anyone else's hunting decisions? ...No hunting? Please explain .... [/b]

Another way it helps to have details is on public land. Kentucky WMA lists alphabetical and show current and past season harvest numbers including for deer antlered/antlerless and turkey as hen, jake or tom and also by weapon. I can see how many have been taken and see how productive the place has been for deer or turkey. It may lead you to or away from certain wmas and helps get an idea of what to expect. With this knowledge shared, you can do some cyberscouting before you hit the ground. Like 76 said, if you also know they were impacted by disease or a poor hatch, it's just one more nice to have modern convenience.

fur trappers knew this would happen, fur market has collapsed and coyotes are basically worthless and the coyote live market is shut down in IN. Very little financial incentive to pursue these invasive deer killing vermin.... Originally posted by refuge hunter: ...Tired of seeing as many yotes as deer.

Quitters If it were easy, everybody would be doing it. It definitely gets tougher this time of year. Especially with this warm weather. Browse is everywhere. I mean I still have leaf lettuce coming up in my garden! Stupid El Nino! I'll still be hunting through the end though. I'll try and gut shoot a few yotes down in Monroe County too.

It is funny how deer numbers in certain pockets vary. Many are reporting numbers of deer sightings being down this year. Personally, my deer sightings have gone way up this year. Which is odd because for the last 4 or 5 years they have dropped steadily to the point where it was hard to even get motivated to go hunt. But this year it has been crazy on both of my main properties. What has been missing is mature bucks this year. Heck even seeing a 2 1/2 year old would be nice at this point. This year it seems like 1 1/2 year old bucks are literally hiding behind every tree. Plenty of does also this year. But then I talk to other guys even in the same county and they are not seeing squat for deer. Been kind of odd for sure.
I just like seeing the real time harvest numbers. The next step would be for the state to be able to break the numbers down in real time even better. With the technology I would think that it wouldn't take too much to see county data and even antlerless vs buck data in real time.
Still time to get out there this year though. Cold fronts are moving in and it could get pretty good in the next few days.

The two places I hunted this year (Fulton & Franklin County) my deer sightings were way up this year... Been a few years since I have seen that many deer... But other than the Doe I took there was only one other one I would have taken and she was bigger than the one I got... Lotta dinks running around but that means in a couple two or three years there should be lots to chose from if they don't get taken or die by other means...

So road kills now add to total?
I have watched this thread on several sites, it is like a competition on "Can we beat last years total?".
Enjoy the deer numbers........ dead and alive!

Enjoy the deer numbers........ dead and alive! Adds to the meat in my freezer. Wasn't by choice. Wasn't gonna be wasted either! Some of us just enjoy watching how the harvest unfolds. I'd think a bean counter would find it interesting. Bad year?

like I said earlier, overall kill is one thing, its the buck kill and age break down that is important...

Many states, including Indiana, use the antlered deer harvest total as a population indicator. (i.e. a declining antlered harvest indicates a declining deer herd.)
The adult female/fawn ratio is typically in the 3:2 range (60%-65%/35%-40%). I've been told you don't want the fawn kill to rise much above that ratio...as that would indicate the damage has already been done.
If you consistently pull water out of a well faster than the well can replenish, over time, the well will eventually go dry. If you are not monitoring water levels in the well, you won't find out there is a problem until it is too late.
We've never been able to accurately measure the "water level" of our deer herd. Indicators are what we are left with....
There are none so blind as those who will not see.

not much of an increase...if it wasnt for the dam "kill all the does" late gun season, there wouldnt be crap of an increase....if the buck kill is down, and the increase is all in the antlerless kill, next year will suck....so, dont put on those frilly panties yet.... lets wait to see where the kill spreads out....
