was thinking of planting something on a few logging roads like a no till brand and in a small clearing where 2 roads come together. Has anyone got this to work what did you plant or is it to late in the year to plant anything now? I know i will have to spray weed killer and let sit for 2 weeks before i scratch the ground up

Others will provide a better answer, but anytime you scratch up the ground it exposes weed seeds that will usually germinate. You might want to spray twice and plant something that will grow from being pressed into the dirt once you've loosen it up and sprayed for the new weed growth.

Seed to ground contact is very important, I am not a fan of the rake and broadcast as you will waste at least 70% of the seed not getting cood soil contact. You also need to factor sunlight, most plants require at least 8 hours per day. Also how close are trees? Trees suck most of the nutrients from the soil.

Remember the saying...."If it sounds too good to be true, most times it is."

Agree with Dave when you "break" any ground you expose native seeds, spray at least twice before planting. If you choose to go ahead wait at least two weeks after spraying to scratch and plant seed, otherwise you risk tranferring the killer of choice into the soil.

I am going to try the same thing this summer on an intersection of lanes as soon as it dries out enough. I did online research and came up with a shade blend made by PlotSpike. It contains Trivalis, fescue, forage rape and ladino white clover. It would need 4 hours of sun. I have never tried it before, but have had good luck on plots in the past. Good luck.

Don't use anything that has Fescue in it no wildlife eats it. Also Fescue has a natural herbicide that kills other species You will end up having a great stand of worthless grass.

I'm sure Throbak can better explain how Fescue repels other plant growth, I'm just telling you what will happen.

Gopher that is why I asked the question I think they sell the stuff at tractor supply and the picture of their plot looked a lot like tall grass to me. I think someone posted that they got forage oats to grow on a logging road but not sure who it was.

Thanks for the warning. I've already bought a bag, I might as well try it out on my lanes. This not a place where I hunt, just thought I would give the deer more variety.

If rescue is so bad, why would PlotSpike put it in this mix? The bag says Kentucky 31 tall rescue, 34%. I'm very curious to see what I get. Even grass lanes would be better than what I have now, which is mud.

After reading Shooters link, I may plant this stuff in my yard to fill in the bare spots.

Fescue is allopathic meaning it will not let anything else grow and it is sod forming Little birds canot get though it if you cannot do anything but one thing for wildlife Kill the Fescue you would be suprised what will come up from the native seed bed some bad most good Joe killed fescue had birdsfoot Trefoil (good)come up that had been supressed for 15 or 20 years I think he said but it was also suppressing a crop of Nodding thistle Bad The fescue will move on you also (bad)

There ya go using those big words again Throbak!34% Fescue! And they call it a food plot blend, it will be 100% fescue in a year.

Alot of the roads on my farm are primarily white clover and we drive over them with little damage to the clover, just a thought.
