AKRON, Ohio – Mike Tonkovich was a marked man at the first statewide Ohio Deer Summit on Saturday morning at the Ohio Division of Wildlife district office. "If I'm hated equally by both hunters and farmers, then I must be doing my job," said Tonkovich, in charge of managing Ohio's white-tailed deer. The Buckeye State deer herd is shrinking by design, and Tonkovich's job was to explain to a full house of 90 sportsmen why that is a good thing.... http://t.co/gAhO2mGNwL

Now that the Amish have brought CWD into the state it is going to shrink more. I sure they are going to shoot out the deer near the hunting preserve.

Ive always said that the Deer biologist/DNR knows they are on their perceived right track when hunters are getting pissed at a dwindling deer herd....

Yup folks, the hunters in Ohio complain about their DNR just as much as we complain about ours... And this piece just proved me right all along... I've been waiting for this kinda comment for weeks. So answer me this Bryan78........ if it really is just all about "Less Deer", and the argument "is the same"....... ........why is Indiana's annual "Non-Quality" Deer hunting industry piddle squat $'s to Ohio's annual 3 BILLION DOLLAR "High Quality" deer hunting industry. And where do you think Indiana is headed next for revenue when they run out of Quantity as their "cash cow"..... A different place than Ohio Regs that are currently STILL creating a 3 Billion Dollar Industry with less deer?????...... LOL!! "Same Argument"??????? "Proves you Right"????? LMAO!!!!

No one cant argue that deer hunting isnt a business...and not just the high fence crap....just look at where the money comes or goes to .... outfitters, retailers, gun and ammo manufacturers, bow/archery companies, clothing companies, boot companies, etc.... it is a multi multi million dollar business....

Outdoor Life reported IN has the highest percentage of B/C bucks as a percentage of total harvest. Ohio had 20 more entries over the period they looked at, but a much larger total harvest as well. As a percentage of total buck harvest, OH was not even in the top 5. States With Top B&C Entries As a % of Total Buck Harvest (2009-2011) 1. Indiana – .084% 2. Kentucky – .082% 3. Kansas – .078% 4. Iowa – .078% 5. Illinois – .065% States With Top Total Number of B&C Entries (2009-2011) 1. Wisconsin – 241 2. Ohio – 151 3. Illinois – 136 4. Kentucky – 134 5. From review of the one link, it appears that Ohio has almost twice as many hunters as Indiana. When assessing the financial aspects of relativity between the retails sales and the number of hunters, it would appear that the real issue is the number of resident hunters and probably has little to do with the management plan for deer. Then, it would be necessary to assess deer habitat for both states and the numerous other financial factors of businesses. It would be pretty hard to argue the management aspect in my opinion.

[/b]I didn't realize that the amount of bait sales can influence/increase the amount of Quality Bucks in a state. Makes about as much sense as Throbaks idea that the pen deer genetics INSIDE a deer fence somehow contribute to the antlersize OUTSIDE of the deer fence. LOL!!!! Now..... imagine if we combine those 2 "solid" theories...... We apparently should pile bait 10 feet deep each year inside those pens and ANY state could grow then magically Booners for miles upon miles...... Outside of the pen. My God..... I think we've got the "secret recipe". Just Brilliant.......

A different place than Ohio Regs that are currently STILL creating a 3 Billion Dollar Industry with less deer????? [/b]Try quoting data that isn't 3-5 years old and you just might smell a bit more credible. But I'm sure just selling more bait could skew those stats right??? LOL!!!!!!

Exactly my point, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Deer hunters have to be the biggest group of whiners and complainers. I run into guys from IL hunting IN public land, they can't get permission to hunt private land in IL and public is over crowded. Do we really want OH regulations, baiting and all?? Originally posted by 76chevy: Deer hunters have to be the biggest group of whiners and complainers. And why is that? Well one, some think their method or style of hunting is the best way and that everyone should be forced to do it that way.... Two, Some think it is ok for them to shoot multiple deer and then go on forums like this and complain that they don't see any deer the next year and tell everyone they should refrain from shooting deer like it suppose to make some sort of impact on their local deer population... Three, Some out there piss and moan on how the DNR does its job and think they can do it better but for some reason don't have the gumption to get a biology degree and and work there way up to the top and run it themselves... Why no one does this is because it is a thankless job with crappy pay having to deal with the whiners and complainers and people who just plain don't get it... Also work your way to the top just to find out that you don't really have that much power to do anything... I don't agree with everything the DNR does, however, I also know that they see things with a different perspective than the average hunter does.. Do we really want OH regulations, baiting and all?? Oh heck no... The same people will still piss and moan all the same...
