First, I want to describe the land I am hunting. It is basically a large square with a creek that runs from the bottom NW corner to the SW & stop 3/4 of the way. The S side border is a hay field & then turns into a corn field. The W side border is cornfield. The N side border is alfalfa field with a pond in it. Within the square is a hay field.

So, I have seen a Doe running along the N side border towards the aw side cornfield. I have also seen a Doe come out of the cornfield on the S side border. This one stared at me & my 3 yo son until he made a noise. Then she bolt to the W side field. This week I scouted the field & saw what looked to be, in a 10' diameter, spots where several deer laid down.

I guess my question is.... Am I valid in thinking that this area is good hunting ground? I mean it's never been hunted, there is lots of food source/cover/water for the deer, & it's an isolated piece of land. I guess I'm worried I got lucky & saw 2 does and they were just passing through.

You have deer there. Good sign. If they have never been hunted, then that is a good reason for deer to be there.

Couple thoughts:

1. How big is the "large square"? 5, 10, 50 100 acres? That may determine how and how frequently I would hunt it.

2. Things will change when the crops are down. It takes a few years to learn a spot and the deer movement.

3. Learn and have fun. You will figure it out.

Agree with Bean on his comments. If the property is small, I'd hunt the edges and not try to walk in where you can be seen for long distances by bedded deer.

approach it from the downwind side and sneak in with a stand on your back and hunt it a few times in bow season.

Find where you think they bed (thick cover) and where you think they feed and set up down wind of this trail

This will answer your questions.

That little isolated piece of land sounds like the perfect spot for a buck to push a hot doe to in order to have some alone time. If there is a bigger woods off in the distance, that's the direction they will most likely come from. Good luck and have fun.
