Here's a quick hunt report from my trip last week in northern California. Had some luck, and such a fun hunt for Roosevelt Elk. The bull appears to be a very old one who was starting to regress in his antlers, and missing some teeth. Huge body size on these rain forest bulls, noticeably larger than the other American species. What a long drive coming back.....34 hours, but made it home over the weekend with all the meat and horns. May even possibly end up as a Boone & Crockett class bull, as the minimum threshold for Roosevelt for the all-time book is only 290".
Had a lot of the meat ground at a local processor to make burger, but of course not the backstraps and loins which I turned into steaks (which in total weighed slightly over 50 lbs alone). Just got the burger meat back from the butcher and total weight was 290# of burger for a grand total of right at 340# of boneless meat off of this bull. Usually on average Colorado bulls we get around 200-225 lbs, so there is obviously a big difference in the body size on these coastal bulls!
