Hey everyone, I already filled my statewide buck tag so I'm wanting to hunt big oaks this weekend. You are allowed 2 extra legal bucks with firearm in there if you purchase military/refuge tags. The 1st u can kill right away... The 2nd u must earn by harvesting and checking in a doe. The gate opens at 4:30am.. I enter the east entrance off 421 cuz they always have it opened... Sometimes the West gate is closed... It's 58,000 acres so takes a long time to drive around so I don't like taking a chance of being late. I try to be at the checkin building by 5:00am to be safe. They start playing a safety video right after 4:30am... And last video plays starting at 5:30am. If you are late for start of last video you won't get in. You must be there b4 5:30 not a minute later or u won't get in to hunt. I'd suggest being there by 5:00am. U must watch the safety video if u haven't yet this year... It's about 15 minutes... Then u sign a paper saying you watched it... Then u need to pay 20 dollars cash... Not card... Cash only... And u recieve a big oaks hunting permit card... After that at 6am you write your name on a ticket and put it in a bucket for a drawing... And people drew first get first dibs at choosing the area they want to hunt. People drew last are last in line to choose area and get whatever's left. This weekend everyone will get in who is on time. It's opening weekend of gun statewide so fewer people are there. It's and opportunity at 2 more legal bucks... It's 58,000 acres high fenced.. The South is a deer hunting ranch and the north is half restricted non hunting... So a lot of state record size bucks come out of there. Drop tines and all... I have a lot of experience with big oaks... I've hunted it quite a bit.. You dont see a lot of deer... But when u do it's usually a monster. I seen the biggest buck of my life there last year opening day of gun season... But didn't get a shot.
