As I become older and hunt on my own, I try to become a little bit more professional at hunting deer and turkey. This particular hunt is probably the best hunt I have had on my own. I woke up early Saturday morning to a clear sky, calm and perfect wind, and a frost on the ground with cold temperatures. I felt really good about how the morning would plan out. I actually walked to my stand well before daylight. I put some Special Golden Estrus on the scent wick I had out over my stand and got ready to go. About 8 o'clock rolled around and I rattled softly. I also softly grunted just a tad bit. Nothing immediately. At about 8:20 am I rattled again, a little harder and I grunted a little harder and I also snort wheezed. Soon before I knew it I had a buck running in from the picked cornfield right ahead of me. The buck had a big body, but the antlers weren't the biggest. The buck hung around my area for awhile and after a few minutes began to walk off. I grunted at him and snort wheezed and he turned his head and came running in down the ridge and across the creek. He walked about 5 yards behind my stand and I tried to turn around without him seeing me but he ended up seeing me. He only ran 20 yards and I got a good look at his rack and decided I would take him. To my surprise, I missed the deer at 20 yards. He ran about 10 feet and stopped. He gradually began to walk back into the lane, this time 40 yards out. I drew back for what seemed minutes, but soon got my pin on the deer and stopped him. I shot and hit the deer and saw blood fly. The deer was shot in the liver and back through the two arteries under the spine above the hips. The deer bled like crazy and only ran 25 yards. I field dressed it and got in drug out and hung up and now it is all done and processed by Daniel and I. It is an honest 10 pointer with an 11 inch inside spread. The score is 21.
