I have always smoked on stand. Smoke rises, period. Here's the deal...You go up no less than 20 feet,and,.... you put cigarette butts in a ziplock bag, and carry them out with you. (in your hand, DO NOT put nasty baggie in your woods bag) http://s1114.photobucket.com/user/R...=67&_suid=138829197853808753966854405146 http://s1114.photobucket.com/user/R...o=0&_suid=138829197853808753966854405146 http://s1114.photobucket.com/user/R...o=0&_suid=138829197853808753966854405146 http://s1114.photobucket.com/user/R...o=0&_suid=138829197853808753966854405146 Plus, who knows how many small bucks and does I've let walk, and pictureless doe's in the freezer... and I took a 7 year hiatus in my late 20's/early 30's, because of legal issues..... I attribute the last 5 buckless seasons almost entirely to a hunter population explosion along the property lines of my best woods. Almost entirely.....Three years ago I tried to fire the only dud cap I have ever seen, at a nice tall and wide 8. Smoke 30 ft. in the air won't scare em off, but the sound a bolt makes when it slams down on a dud cap will...

I feel it really doesn't matter if you smoke or not. If the wind is wrong your screwed no matter what.

I will amend my post in deference to Smokey the Bear. Originally posted by John Scifres: So smoke if ya wanna. But only if it is raining. Or if you have a fire extinguisher. Or a glass of water. Or ya gotta pee. And I have never really found leaves to be tender. Especially the dry ones

One thing we can all agree on....Quitting Smoking would be best! ...That being said, if I didn't enjoy hunting, I wouldent go. If I went 4-6 hours without a smoke, I would not be enjoying myself,I would be miserable. I take precautions, like removing the glove from the hand I'm going to smoke with, and smoking with the hand that's down wind from my body, and I'll be the first to admit that it adds more work to my list, I have to spray everything off with scent killer and hang my stuff on the line during the mid-day. For those worried I might set the woods on fire, Fear Not!..As stated previously, I butt them on the tree and zip-lock bag them. I don't recall ever dropping one, but if I ever did,I would climb down and get it at once, because while smoke starts at 20-30 feet and rises, a nicotene saturated butt lays on the ground, and stinks up ground level winds for a week. I tend to agree with Blackoak.. If the wind is good, your good. If the wind is bad, your screwed....Smoke or no. I certianly would not suggest that smoking "makes them curious" like the guy tried to say in the trespassing thread, but the proof is in the pudding, ALL the deer in the above pics were killed within a half hour of smoking, and some of them within a matter of just a few minutes. CONGRATS WEEDHOPPER. I've snatched a couple of monkeys off my back, but the nicotene monkey has the tightest grip of all. Good for you man!

If you have the wind in your favor it won't matter. However, on those marginal days, real still, swirling winds, etc. it could definitely get you busted.
Think about this. As a non smoker, I can immediately smell if someone is smoking when I walk into a room or building, but I can't smell if people are in there or not. I can also pick up the cigarette smoke odor off of an individual when they walk into a smoke free environment, but I can't smell the person.
There is no debate that deer can smell a whole lot better than us, so it's obvious that they are going to detect a smoker or cigarette smoke very easy, and probably before they smell human scent, as cigarette odor is much stronger.

I agree Steiny. What disheartens me is, I smelled that way for 40+ years and never realized it.

I think the cigarette smell on people smells worse then the cigarette smoke itself... I didn't realize that till after I quit smoking myself... Keep it up, I'm rooting for you!!!!

I quit smoking in 88 and never once regret it. For 4-5 years after I quit every once in a while I'd get a whiff of someone else's cigarette and want one real bad.
Today I cant stand to be around the smell of cigarette smoke.
It will get easier as time goes on. Good luck, h.h.
If you're not a hemorrhoid, get off my butt.
