Just the standard Pere Marquette River trip in Michigan. Steelhead and browns were sought. Three steelhead and two brown chasers to the boat. Soft current just off the edges of fast water, egg beads and small flies, swinging and drifting with a centerpin reel setup and tossing hot'n'tots in areas of lumber. Perfect weather with launch temp at 26, mild wind with overcast and a high at 34. Eagles, deer and dead quiet out there today. Everything returned to the river to fight another day.

The gloves don't take the slime off and they have just enough "mesh" on them to help hold the fish. I prefer to use grips but we didn't have any with us. The biggest discussion with various folks up there is how big of an issue the nets create in regard to slime and hurting the fish. i've always wondered what issue is created by guys who grip the tail so tight that it crushes the fish. With the warmer temps up there, the fish were very active and we hit a lot of fish in two days, steelhead, coho and browns. Having my own drift boat, actually an 11 foot pram designed to fly fish from, makes the game much more interesting by having to read the river, the currents, the new structure, water flow speed and having to navigate some very tight areas with reasonably strong currents over the course of a six or seven hour float.

But, I've also heard/read that its just as bad to lift a heavy fish by the jaw. "They" say it causes dislocated jaws and it puts too much pressure on their internal organs. I did buy a rubber mesh net that supposedly helps. I'm not convinced either one is as much as an issue as just plain old rough handling of the fish in the boat before the release. Can't hurt though…..

Sure makes you wonder. Hey, I've got my wife an xmas present from Flymasters that's gloves the are made of a wool fabric that supposedly do not suck any water at all. If she likes them I'll let you know. I'm told that I can use them rowing the drift pram and pull the anchor and the hands/finger never get wet. I agree that the issue of how to deal with fish is tough one. Sometimes makes me wonder if pictures are worth it.
