Has anyone ever put an earth anchor right on the end of a long snare? My thought is I have some waterways with great crossings on them but nothing to anchor off with. Instead of putting an anchor in the ground then attaching a snare, why not just build the snare with an anchor on the end of it right from the get go. Pros/Cons anyone?

I use earth anchors and attach snares with a swivel and link. The only problem I see with an all in one snare/anchor would be the yote twisting up your cable until it broke. You need some kind of swivel in the snare. If the yote hangs himself right away then problem would be solved but in a open area you might find nothing but whats left of your anchor and cable. h.h.

I too have a lot of CRP and weedy grass waterways that I snare after the snow gets on. Never thought of attaching the anchor directly to the snare. Like HH said, I like to have a swivel on my snares, but with that being said, i'm not so sure they work that well anyway. In a fence, most of my coyotes are done pretty quick. In an open set like that, they will usually be alive when you get there. All stuff you already know…just typing out loud….. I'll think about it while i'm laying on my belly in a fence row waiting on a deer tonight……. A kill pole is an option in the grass waterways. I have used them before, and they work. I just don't like lugging the damned heavy things around.

I thought of the kill pole also but like you said, they are a pain to lug and thats what I want to get away from. Keep the thoughts coming and I will decide if I want to try it or not.

sure have and they work fine. Swivels are your friend! I like a long snare also, like 12 feet long. Originally posted by bassbum: Has anyone ever put an earth anchor right on the end of a long snare?...

Thanks for all the feed back guys and I am sort of with you Parker, in that I will sit back and let the cats fight in the other threads but this thread seems pretty easy going. Trad, they always told me that once you get the first one in a foothold the rest are easy. It took me 3 months to get my first one and then caught 3 in that week. I want a copy of that Photo when you get it also. Looks like I will be making up a few earth anchored snares later on this week. Thanks guys.

i think your will regret not putting some kind of swivel in your snares. Ive seen what a snare without a swivel can look like if the animal stays alive especially if its caught somewhere besides the neck. h.h.

I plan on putting Swivels in them HH. I am going to build them so I can put a quick link on them.

I keep going back to the vision of a coyote going round and round, and the cable rubbing on a rock and in the dirt and fraying. However, it wouldn't be any different than having the same size earth anchor on it. Believe it or not, as long as I have been doing this, I do not know if the pre-made earth anchors are made with heavier cable than the typical snare cable…..

I am picking up my earth anchor material later this week. I will get one put together and put a pic up. I am using 3/32 cable for my snares and for earth anchors. The guy I sell to caught 63 yotes in the first 3 weeks of season in footholds and he uses 3/32 cable anchors so I know it will work. The snares we ran as kids were alot thinner then 3/32 but we were after fox. Most everything I read says it is what I need to snare with.

7x7 3/32 cable is what my pre-made earth anchors are made from. They work great in open areas where there is nothing to tie up to. h.h.
