Congrats on the chupacabra Stick!!!!! I've seen some sorry looking coyotes before, but that poor sucker takes the cake. You certainly did him a favor!!!!

Man you gotta love a good snowfall for snaring. I've got snares hanging in all the obvious places, but would've never guessed these dogs were snaking through this one particular impenetrable brush thicket. But sign in the snow doesn't lie

Hung a snare deep inside it, and then 48 hours later....got the culprit!

I agree that the snow is a great tool for snaring these things…..However, it can also be a PIA in the fences, and for steel trapping. I had a LOT of activity last night night. But, had two refusals due to the holes being plugged with snow.
Tracks on the high side of the fence. As soon as the coyote broke through the crust, he backed out.


After I dug, and broomed it out. I had a 1/2 dozen of these crawl unders to do.


Had THREE of 6 steel traps in the blind sets tripped under the snow. Coyote tracks all over em. The snow was so heavy, when the coyotes stepped above the pan, it just pushed the snow down set the trap off before their feet got close. SO, I spent a big part of the morning digging, brooming, and resetting those. Had 'em dead to rights…..makes my head hurt!!!! Trap right where the cluster of tracks are, at the buried step stick….


Then……the deer that I am "protecting" have to get in on the action!!!!! Clear out in the middle of a open bean field!!! :rolleyes:


And FINALLY………another female. Fur still good!

If this snow had blown and drifted it would have wrecked most of my sets. But fortunately there was no wind afterwards. We had 5-6 inches fall, which melted off to about 3-4 inches yesterday.

Good catches guys, I've gotta say SS that was one pathetic dog. Like Chevy said hard to believe he was still alive. keep after then fellas.

Gilley, not much hair left to keep him warm. All I can figure is maybe he had a good underground den to crawl into. Or maybe he was bedding in the nearby bottoms, which has a big thick stand of 4-5 foot tall grass this year. I've been out in that stuff looking for sheds and it's pretty cozy. In past years I've actually walked right up on bedded yotes while shed hunting in it.

Hey sticksender, you seeing much for fresh coyote sign/tracks??? It's like they shut down after Sunday here. One set of tracks made last night is all I've seen......I know DP has some fresh meat running around!!!

1 fresh set of tracks on the farm last night.....just waiting on yaz to bring home the bacon on my new spot:)

Not much Yaz. Saw where one passed through last night, on a bee-line, but nowhere near any sets.

Sometime next week, I may go ahead and pull 'em, unless the action livens up again.

I'm the same way. If it don't pick up, I'm pulling them all. I'm going to pull one farm regardless this weekend.

Well looks like mine are coming down sooner than expected. Got the call today that my Lion hunt is on, and will be leaving Saturday for Colorado. They're finally getting some snow and cold out there, after several weeks of mild weather.

One more……..makes 19. Hope to get #20 before the weekend, and mine are coming down. As you can tell, this one would have been gone if I had to wait till this evening to check. Re-vamping the snaring set ups for next year to include 1/8" extensions, inline barrel swivels, and 1x19 stainless loops. Slide wires to kill poles on the most active crawl unders to get them away from the fence and hopefully DOA.. I don't like loosing them after getting them caught.
