Very Nice write up in Outdoor Indiana - September/October 2013 magazine about the history of Ruffed Grouse in Indiana cool

Never knew we traded ruffed grouse for Turkey with Missouri back in the Day... eek

Good stuff Jack...

Brew, thanks for the info. I was just wondering if you, and other readers, have heard some people almost swear that the reason we do not have more grouse in Indiana is because Indiana traded some of our grouse for Missouri turkeys many years ago. (I have not yet read the full article to see if that comment was covered.)

May all our hunts be safe, enjoyable, and deeply appreciated.

While Indiana did indeed trade 3 grouse per turkey with Missouri, nearly 90% of those birds were captured in Brown County State Park and Crane Depot (two areas the average grouse hunter can't hunt). By the way the Missouri experiment was a total failure as they have closed their grouse season. The key is habitat.

Good job jack... the hunting sport I love the most and its all but gone...I no longer have a true bird dog and I haven't shouldered a gun in about 15 years when I did have the rare flush. I hope we get more folks involved in saving this great bird...... tastey

I'd be happy just seeing a grouse in the wild. I have watched videos of them drumming and it is quite the spectacle.

In regard to grouse, I was in Michigan this weekend and they are saying that expect very good numbers this year.

I'm teaching a bowhunter education class that day and can't make it, but the event really is a good time. The one I attended a few years ago, I took my daughter (probably twelve at the time) and she enjoyed it as well. She won a duffle bag for a door prize and was excited about that. Plus you get to see Jack and that's worth the trip alone.

It also appears that the Blomington contingent will be asking the legislative summer study to do something about the terrible logging going on in the backcountry area of Morgan-Monroe. I'd ask as many as possible to seriously think about attending the meetings at Spring Mill State Park on October 1 & 2. After they grill Jack Seifert I'm sure the kumabya singing will start...

I may have to crash at gundude's house.

I didn't want to mess up anybody's deer hunt. I may do that this year if I get a chance to come down. I need to get maggie into some preserve birds first or she'll be useless on grouse.

Jack; my boy read the story in OI and now he is looking for some one to buy every tree he has on 40 acres that is worth something to preserve the 4 or 5 grouse he has living there

Keep in mind that the forest is dynamic. The changes we see take a long time to occur but managing the forest is a hard thing to do and keeping those few grouse around would be a godsend. May want to consult with a DNR Forester or Biologist.

RGS presented IDNR with a check for over $1300 to be used at the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment (HEE) which is a 100 year project to demonstrate the effectiveness of proper forest management.

On a really good note Jack Seifert told me that the push for a discussion on the logging in the backcountry area has been pulled from the agenda for Spring mill in October!!!

Jack

P.S. I paid your bill and you can just pay me back when I see you.

Well, it's an English gun so probably not...

I also got 10 pounds of special grouse seed I'd like you to spread on some of those logging trails or near where you saw those quail. I'll drop it by one day and you can plant next spring.
