I will be taking my 8 year old son out for his first hunt with him being the shooter. He will be shooting his .50 Miniloader. He's been shooting it really good lately. If the deer stay on the fields like they have been, I'm thinking he has a good shot. If he takes to it like I think he will, this season is all about him. Whether he kills or not, the memories we will make is what this is all about for me!

Lord willing, we will be at CBF experiencing some of Bill's cooking, Joe's guiding, Tony's bc-ing, Zeb's stories, and several boys being mentored by some great guys.

Always a fun time at huntin camp. Evan you are due to bust one. I look forward to you field dressing and skinning your first one.

Just got back from Atterbury making sure the shotguns are still on. 2" high at 50 yds. Should get the job done if the kids can hold it steady.

Re: Next weekend. - 09/28/2014 01:58 PM

Laine and I sat a double ladder and saw a doe who snuck up from behind last night. Got busted trying to get turned around.

This morning we sat on the ground in my "Sure Thing" area. The deer usually come through here late but we had another one sneak up from behind and bust us again. Around 9:00 we see a doe coming but the brush kept her hidden from a shot. As I was watching her, I noted Laine putting her finger into the trigger guard and nowhere near being turned to the deer. I reminded her not to put her finger on the trigger until she was about to shoot. She gave me a dirty look that confused me. A couple minutes later, the doe I was watching wandered off and she tells me that she was on a different deer and was going to shoot her when I warned her. She said she had a great shot but obeyed my warning. I told her how sorry I was and that if that happens again to make it clear to me that she was on a deer.

A couple minutes later a doe and a couple little ones walk through again shielded by brush. The doe finally stopped in a spot where I could clearly see her but Lainey was blocked. Then one of the little ones gets into an opening where I could see but again Lainey could not. How I wish I had put up the double ladder in this area. I will fix that before regular gun season. Of course by then all the undergrowth will be gone.

One of the little ones circled around 20 yards behind us but by then Lainey was pretty pumped with adrenaline and could not get the gun up and steady for the chip shot. The fawn wandered off after offering several shots. At one point Lainey asked me to help hold the gun up for her but it wasn't possible. Man it's painful to have you kid say "help me Daddy" and not be able to.

After all the action we both just sat there shaking from the adrenaline dump. Neither of us could do anything but smile. What a glorious morning even without closing the deal.
