I've gotten some Real World Wildlife Products Winter Salad mix and their soybeans , adding some sugar beats and big dog radishes as well

Wondered what everyone else is planting for late season

Winter wheat is the main ingredient for my plots. I usually plant Shot Plot and ground hog radishes mix in mid august and then broadcast the wheat in late sept after the no fly date. After the crops are harvested around me the deer hit this plot daily. On many occasions Ive had 20+ in the plot at one time. h.h.

The first plot I put in are Real World soybeans, about 2 acres. Planted early June, but they are getting mowed down pretty good by the deer. Might have to till those up later and replant something else for fall season in that spot. Or maybe just seed over them with radish or turnips. The 2nd plot is Rutabaga, about 1.5 acres. Just planted those in mid-July due to a very long 100 day maturity time. Need rain badly for those right now. My first time trying them, but supposed to be more palatable than turnips before a frost. The 3rd plot will be daikon radish, will plant mid-August, about 2 acres. The 4th plot will be an upland plot, about 3 acres of Winter Rye, planted around Sept 1st.

Planted two acres of Eagle beans over Memorial Day weekend. That field is already standing between waist and chest high, so we took down the electric fence over the weekend.
Have two more plots to plant in late August, roughly three acres total. After trying a bit of everything in those plots the past five years...we're going back to a Buck Forage oats/winter rye mix this year.

I also have Real World beans.. did they do well ?

I planted soybeans til last year and found broadcasting worked better than row planting. When row planting the deer go down the row eating the beans and doesnt take long for them to get mowed off. Broadcasting, they grew taller and seem to last longer. I quit planting beans last year because by the time of the season I wanted the deer in the plot the food was mostly gone. Winter wheat last all winter and radishes will last up til late Jan - Feb in my climate making food available when the deer need it the most. h.h.

Yes they're basically standard Roundup-ready beans, except a shatter-resistant variety. The idea being that the pods will stay intact in the late season Nov-Dec-Jan so they'll be available for deer & turkeys. I've planted normal ag beans in the past and found that the pods usually bust open by as soon as late November and the beans rot on the ground. The RW beans stay in the pods longer.

Don't give up on the Real World beans too early. I have a one acre plot in a heavy deer concentration area that has been planted with Real World beans for the past few years. My strategy is to let the deer have the early growth and allow the weeds some time to take over the plot before burning them back in late July. By then the beans are have good roots established and can put on some fast top growth that withstands subsequent browsing. By the end of growing season the plants are carrying a good number of mature pods.

We started out planting ag beans, then went to Eagle beans before switching to Real World beans. Last year, our supplier did not have any Real World beans, so we purchased Eagle beans instead. Had a leftover bag of Real World....so out of curiosity, rather than mix the seed, we planted part of the plot in Eagle beans and part of the plot in Real World. Result...the deer would walk through Real World beans to get to the Eagle beans.

Will admit I was a bit concerned about pod life with the Eagle beans, but the plants were void of pods by January and we had virtually zero volunteer beans growing this spring. I have to believe the pods held and the deer reaped the benefit. Had the pods broken down and dropped seed, there would have been volunteer beans in the field.

We plant beans in rows, but keep the deer out with an electric fence (two strands of electric tape and a solar charger) until the beans get some height on them. After that, the beans grow faster than the deer can browse. Most of that field is standing chest high as we speak.

Good to hear input from different guys on their experiences. Nothing much is growing here, since it stopped raining 6 weeks ago. We've had a total of 1/2" of rain since the middle of June. Even the heavy bottom-land soils are powder dry. We're seeing the corn fields on the lighter soils turning brown already. Praying that is starts raining again soon!

I Don’t have the ground or machinery to plant beans. If I would it would be Eagle. Always hear great things about that variety.

We have 4 plots out this year and all of them are brassicas and clovers. I seeded in some radish’s as well. Deer here really Iike clovers and never even touch radishes or turnips/beets. I keep thinking it is just new to them and they will figure it out someday. I have to weed eat or take my push mower to clear everything after I kill it. There is just no way to get to the areas without doing that. That can make it good since it keeps people out, low disturbance, etc.... these plot are not destination food plot but areas mowed down to a good shot is available in tall thick thickets.

We have had dry/hot and then good rains. Plots are looking great and deer are hitting them daily.

We are ready.

Most of the time deer browse the tops of turnips and radishes. I dont see them eating the bulb until late winter/early spring, then I see nibbles on the bulbs. They like them better after a heavy frost/freeze when the sugars go into the leaves. Ive planted shot plot for 10+ years and the deer seem to like it. If you can only plant one thing winter wheat is hard to beat. Remember deer are eating protein plants right now for putting on growth, when it gets cold they head for food with carbs for heat. h.h.

Yeah I hear that is how it is supposed to go. I can plant turnips and radishes and they will sit and rot. Deer walk right by them every year I have planted them. Oh well, try again this year and see.

Mowed plots today. Sprayed three with roundup. Ill disc and plant them in 2 - 3 weeks. I like to plant just before a rain. h.h.

The rains finally came here last week after 6 weeks of drought. Thought we might have to replant this plot of Rutabagas, but they finally emerged after 4 inches of rainfall. Looks like its coming up a little patchy but might be ok. These you have to plant early due to a long maturity time. First time trying them, but supposed to be more palatable in the Fall, more so than turnips.

Still have some other spots to plant Winter Rye, Purple Top Turnips, Austrian Winter Peas and Daikon Radish.

Looks good. Those bare spots might fill in. You can always broadcast wheat or rye later. h.h.

Yeah hoping so. If not I might fill in the blank spots with radish. A lot of years it's tough to get the fall plots going due to lack of rains. My ultimate dream is to drill a well nearby so I could irrigate. May never happen but it's a nice fantasy to dream about ;-)

Planted 3 plots today with Shot Plot, Provide and a small amount of red clover. Broadcasting wheat on top next month and more fertilizer. Ground was almost to wet to disc so the seeds should be up soon. h.h.

How are the plots coming?

Checked my Rutabaga field again and they are filling in nicely. We've been fortunate to have a lot of rain in August. These things are gonna be huge



The other plots I put in a mixture of seeds. This one I just planted with Winter Rye and a light seeding of Austrian Winter Peas, and is coming up pretty good so far. Might have been a little early for the Rye, but I didn't really expect this much rain. At least the Rye will come in good and thick before winter hits. You can see the pea vines starting to come up too. These plots should help the deer out well into winter, long after hunting seasons are past.

They are looking nice sticksender. We had a wet August for sure. We got just under 5" for the week, got 2.5 yesterday. h.h.

When I had good private, I would do various plots... clover of course, usually Whitetail Institute or MossyOak Biologic which had Chicory in it and mix in some Alfalfa at times .. I would lime and fertilize as needed... those would be my year round plots... they would of course go dormate after the first heavy frosts... still, deer would dig thru the snow in Feb./March to feed on it .... the "Kill Plots" were Rape, Forage Turnip by Evolved Habits....I'd set stands either over them or around them 50-100 yds away on trails ... the idea was to pull in the Does, and the bucks would follow... it worked for 18 years .... now it is back to state lands, no more plots and hunting is tougher for sure.... the state dosnt consider food plots "baiting" ... but yet, using minerals are ... go figure ... actually, I'm glad minerals and dumping "bait" is considered baiting..... hunting over food plots isnt as easy as one may think and esp. it doing it by hand, it is hard work as I did ... never had a tractor or ATV... push mower and a rake and a roto tiller is all I used along with a 4 gallon back pack sprayer of Gly. I spent many loooong hours in those plots... ...

I planted all of my fall plots 10-14 days ago. So far they are all doing well. Several of them are small secluded plots that are basically no till "throw and mow" scenarios. I have one large clover plot that I tilled. In the clover plot I put down an oats and rye nurse crop as well. I also did a turnip, radish, kale, and snow pea plot that is generally good every year. Most of my secluded plots are a combination of oats, rye, clover, and rape. I will hit them all with a good dose of 46-0-0 in a couple weeks right before a rain and then just let them go.

Checked plots and freshened up a mock scrape today. Plots where put in Aug 10 and doing nicely.



This plot is my main stand. It planted with Shot Plot, Provide and voleenteer wheat. The wheat from last year matured out and got disc back into the soil. I might have to mow the wheat down to the brassic tops.



Wheat will overtake the turnips and rape.



This clover plot is tucked back into a lite traveled area and never gets hunted. Closest stand is 150 yards.



This plot is along side my woods and is planted with the same seed as the first plot.



This plot is 100 yards up from the last one.

Freshened up the mock scrape but couldnt look at cams, forgot my laptop. I got some bushes to trim next cool down and then wait for nature to take its course............h.h.

Set those stands up on the way to the food plot brother. Looks good so far!
