I am sort of new at preparing venison. I took a venison roast and put it in a crock pot. Then I put about 1/2 inch of water in the pot. sprinkled some minced onion bits on the meat. I let this cook on low for 10 hours. The meat was well done and falling apart. I took the meat out to cut it up in that I want to make a venison vegetable soup. Now as I sampled a tid bit of this meat to me it tasted just like beef. I did not discern any wild taste as I have in other venison. The 6 point Buck was not real old I don't think. Can Venison taste like beef? I am really puzzled by this. Please respond.

Being a rookie with cooking venison and cooking for that matter (HAW!) I was shocked at the beefy taste. I honestly could tell no difference. This is going to make some awesome soup! :-) Thanks for the reply.

Yes it will, shred it up little pepper and BBQ on a toasted bun is tough to beat also. Manhattans are another way to use that. Endless possibilities!!

Funny how one deer will have some gamey taste and another won't, even in regard to older bucks. I do buy into the idea that it can depend on the stress the animal goes through at the point of kill and to a degree what their diet is and how they are butchered.

The bad tastes mostly comes from the lack of proper care of the meat as it is processed. The #1 thing that makes the meat gamey is the deer fat, if it is not removed it will taste bad & give you a greasy film on the roof of your mouth. The reason why is the body temp of cows & pigs is close to the body temp of humans. So the fat from them will liquefy at our body temp but the body temp of deer is over 100° & there fat won't liquefy at our body temp.
The time it takes to get the deer meat down to under 40° will change the taste too, every minute it takes to get the deers temp down more Bacteria are multiplying. Here is a link the explains it.

Agree

I can't tell a difference when it is spiced up or marinated strongly. Which is good, but also like some "venison" taste as well.

I also agree on the taste will be better when a good kill shot is made, field dressed properly, and butchered and deboned well. No fat!!

I was really worried about the buck I shot last year. He was the first old deer I had ever shot and everyone always said the old bucks tasted bad and to just turn them all to sausage. We ate some of it for the first time and it tasted great. Just like all the other deer I've killed. It really is all in the preparation from field to table.

I know that the farm fed deer from Clark county taste much better that the woodland deer that I used to take in Maryland.

I agree that proper care can make a world of difference also.

We do quite a bit of the crock pot roasts. Usually throw in a can or two of cream of celery or mushroom. After all, ya needs some gravy!
