I'vegota surface layer of green snotty looking algae out from the banks about 8' all the way around my pond.
Any easy way to get rid of it?

Have you tried copper sulfate. You can broadcast it over the scum or take a pillow case and put some in it and use a boat to drag it around your pond.

You just have filamentous algae. Probably Spirogyra. Its tough to treat a pond with its temp below 60 degrees. Copper sulfate works and so does Cutrine Plus. Mix 1 pint of Cutrine and 2 ounces of surfactant per gallon of water. Shake it up good and spray it on the algae mats. I would avoid the boat drag method. It works good but its old school and can add way too much copper to your pond.

If you are just getting Copper sulfate you can get it at your local F/S store or Tractor Supply. Make sure you get the fine powder but not ultra fine. I have 44,000 pounds of it here but its not worth traveling distances to pick up copper. Right now copper is going up in price due to China and we anticipate all time highs this year. Try and find it for less than $1.50 per pound. Tractor Supply may be expensive but if you go to your local grain/feed store you may find it cheaper. Always buy it in the 50# bag. Never buy it in the containers as they charge 2-3 dollars per pound.

Sprayed about half of it today w/ Cutrine. Will let you know how it works. Found it at Rural King store.

A guy told me not to spray it all at once because the dying vegitation robs the pond of oxygen and too much could kill fish. Any truth to that?

Also, is there any danger in eating fish after this has been applied?

Yep but you are treating Algae. The plants will be fine. No danger to eating fish. Treat 1/4 to 1/2 the pond at a time. If the entire pond is covered treat 1/4 at a time.

Good luck. Would like to see some B4 and after pics.

Thanks for the advice. It's been 8 days, since first treatment, and it did a pretty decent job on the area I sprayed. Hit another big chunk of it tonight. Hope I can get this crud cleaned up.

Steiny,
I Just treated my pond with Cutrine Granular that I got from Rural King. I have used it the last couple years and it does a nice job taking care of the Slime. It usually takes 2 applications a year for me to keep it down.

I haven't tried the liquid stuff yet,the granular is pretty easy to spread by hand.

That Cutrine has worked great ! Second treatment got most of it. I think I'll give it a couple weeks, then hit it again in the few spots that still have a little, and she ought to be cleaned up real nice.

Thanks again !

Another good use for copper sulfate is to get the mold or algae crap off your roof. Last year after doing the neighboors pond I had some left over and sprayed it in my roof. Hosed it off and it looked like new!
