I posted this in the Big Game thread but thought it may get more attention here:

I need some info from you rifle guys. I grew up shooting a 30.06 or .270 for deer in WV. This time next month, Luke and I will be in Africa for a safari hunt. We will be shooting game from whitetail to mule deer to elk. Depends on how much $$ we have saved by then. A lot of people recommend a .300 win mag, some a .308, and some the 30-06. Our shots, I am told, will be under 150 yards. I am looking to actually purchase a gun for this trip for future use - maybe out west.

I would appreciate your thoughts as I have only deer hunted with my muzzleloader for years. I would prefer to bow hunt but we will not be there long enough. This will be a spot and stalk hunt for us both.

I know this a preference type of question so o-pine all you want. Thanks in advance.

Oh, and if someone has a used rifle, in calibers mentioned, for sale we may talk a bit.

Update since last night: I am thinking about going with the 30-06. It has tested time, will be enough gun for anything we hunt, and ammo is everywhere. Looks like 180 to 220 grain is the norm w/ 180 grain being the most recommended.

I still would like your thoughts.

With the game you're hunting and the bullet weights you mentioned...the .06 is plenty!

Luke wouldn't like the recoil from the 300 WinMag...

.06 is a favorite of mine too. There is a lot of ammo available in different weights for any game you want to hunt including big bear. Any of the ones you listed will work....but Id rather have a .300 Ultra Mag instead of the .300 Win Mag. h.h.

.30-06 would be a great choice. Plenty of power, manageable recoil, easy to find rounds in any store.

Great round. Only regret I have is selling one in a Rem 700. Great gun I wish I still had.

Good IN deer gun too if you wanted it to do double duty. =)
