MERIDIAN TWP. – Less than a week after officials announced a diseased deer was found in Meridian Township, sharpshooters began killing deer in the township Wednesday.

The shooting is focused on a 2-mile radius from the intersection of Marsh and Haslett roads. The deer with chronic wasting disease -- the first such wild deer found in Michigan -- was discovered near there about a month ago. State officials didn't announce the find until last week.

"We don't know how widespread the disease is and over what geographic area," Chad Stewart said.

"We'll start within two miles and go out from there.".....

When CWD is found in Indiana does our DNR have a plan ready to control the disease? h.h.

Since Chad Stewart is in charge of this Michigan outbreak I assume Indiana plan would be similar or the same, surround the area and destroy all the whitetail inside the perimeter? h.h.

they have no clue...other than to kill all the deer in the area.

Imagine the guys who just plunked down $$$$ for a deer lease in this area.

I have the Indiana plan somewhere, when I find it I will post it. the short version..........

The infected county and all counties surrounding it will double all season/weapon bag limits bag limits.

Two bucks could be taken in the CWD zone, one would count as your season buck, double the archery and muzzleloader antlerless harvest. ands double the antlerless permits.

Now the question is..... who wants to eat a deer that could be infected with CWD? I do not remember any requirement to have a mandatory check on deer taken in the CWD zone.

Joe, How are those deer being disposed of? Improper disposal of those carcasses in NON-CWD areas could result in "contamination" of additional areas.

That raises THIS question. Indiana has a rule on the books that MOST people do not know about. There are certain requirements to bring in harvested cervids from out of state. These requirements are to keep the spreading of CWD to new areas. I have often thought that WHEN we see it in Indiana, it will because of this…..someone just throwing the carcass of an infected animal out in the woods to get rid of it. Does this "Plan" have any provisions to ensure this does not happen???

See the section on CWD.

I still need to find the Indiana plan but I do not remember anything on how a carcass was to be disposed. I do know that TODAY it is illegal to bring a carcass or head and cape into Indiana from ANY CWD state. the skull cap must be free of any meat or brain matter and the meat must be free of bone.

Again I need to find the plan and post it I do have it stored "somewhere" on this dang computer!

as a wildlife control operator, all animals I dispatched had to be incinerated or buried minimum of 4 foot deep iirc.

Don't belive that's the latest and greatest version..... Was told yesterday Indiana's was revised recently.

Someone in wildlife should have the updated version!!
