Disclaimer and apology up front. I am making fun of myself as I type this potential soapbox, or new thinking I have.. so feel free to slam me on this one!! I need a good kick in the pants.

My objective is to see if others have had this same thought process... so here it goes..

ONE of the many reasons I deer hunt is so I can provide quality meat for my family. We eat wild-venison a bunch! Five deer per year for my family of five is about right. I know I have told them, and many other folks that inquire, how much better of an alternative to store bought meat that venison is. Is this true?

For those who are reading this that are organic nuts (guaranteed to have several on this forum!) have you thought about what a main staple of food our beloved corn-rats eat? Corn! Not just any ole corn.. but GMO Corn... Jeez, I am hating myself even more after bringing that acronym up since I support Monsanto HEAVILY as I plant round up ready beans and corn for you guessed it.. the-WILDLIFE that I harvest and share with my family.

Yes, deer eat browse/forbs/and other tasty non-GMO vegetation, but you cannot help to think how much Roundup the deer have 'rounded up' over the years.

Why do I give a crap about GMO/Organic/Roundup consumption? I opened my eyes a bit after reading an article like this, , amongst many other studies that I have seen which indicates a direct connection to roundup and cancer.

Will the giants prove roundup is safe once again? Maybe, but there will be something else heavily marketed like 2,4-D largely because Glphosate has become near ineffective with weed-control in our fields.

I am not quite ready to start preaching anti-GMO but I suppose I am beginning the journey of really learning about the potential cause & effect of this product.

Anyone else have something to share about this?

I don't want to get into the controversial topic, but I believe everyone should understand and educate themselves on how their food is produced. There is a lot of information on Monsanto out there and I would encourage everyone to take a look.
Who controls seed production?
Who manufacturers seeds that are modified?
What percentage of seeds are controlled by what companies?

the deer I hunt eat mostly GMO/round up ready seed in fields pumped with atrazine, glyphosate (still widely used), and 2,4-D herbicide among many others.

Still safer than beef from a factory feed lot and slaughter house. It might not be "organic" but I prefer it over beef.

I agree chevy.. I will say that it is likely the better choice over beef.

Again, parrot- totally agree with the clean rivers issue... there is much work to be done there too.

According to a brief review of the literature, glyphosate (Roundup) does not bioaccumulate. In other words, animals eat plants contaminated with it and excrete almost all of it. Very little is retained in their bodies. Most toxins bioaccumulate in fat. As venison is very lean, and we discard nearly all the fat it does have, there is little chance that we are being dosed with glyphosate by eating venison. You have a much greater worry about using it directly or eating a lot of GMO foods.

The only observation I have on this subject is this. We always rotate a couple of fields of non-GMO corn hybrid (if there is such a thing). It is getting harder to find the seed. The deer will walk through the triple stack corn to eat in the non-GMO stuff. They will eat GMO if they have to. But we always notice more deer damage (very little at that) in the non-GMO corn. Maybe they know something we don't. This year, the non-GMO out performed the GMO corn, and stood better in the high winds we had. GMO stuff went to the ground.

cornfed deer tastes alot better than wholely organic mountain deer, gmo or no gmo.

wild venison is wild venison to me....I dont care what corn(or beans)(or browse) it eats...... I'll still eat the heck out of it.....

That's not there main source of nutrition. They browse on a lot. No worries here to feed family and friends with tasty venison!

All things considered, venison is much healthier than beef, pork, lamb bought at the store

I put out a feeder in the offseason with tofu, soymilk, and boxes of kashi cereal. I also put out a sign that says don't eat the corn or beans. Makes me feel healthier.

I believe the American Heart Association recommends venison over beef and pork.

I'm in total agreement with Yaz. Deer prefer non-gmo. I have a 16 row planter, 12 rows of triple stack and 4 rows of refuge (non-gmo) to fulfill the 20% the gov't requires. Planted next to my woods, the deer mow down those 4 rows and don't touch the triple stack. Must taste better or they know something that we humans haven't figured out yet.

I can taste the difference and prefer woods deer over ag deer.
