At the advice of Fullrut, I planted radishes this year. I got Groundhog Radishes for 2.50# at a local seed place.

After prep-ing my field, I got the seed out about a week or so ago. With all this rain the past week things are looking really good. Where this field is and with what is around it - late season will be really awesome. Looking forward to see how these things grow and how the deer react to them.

I just bought 50lbs of tillage radishes and hope to have them in the ground this weekend as well as some buck forage oats.

I saw some at Rural King the other day for wildlife so I read the package and it stated they are daikon radish. Wonder if those are the same as groundhog radish? I planted turnips Tuesday and I might get some of the daikon and plant them too. h.h.

I ordered 2 pounds of Daikon seeds and Im going to plant them beside the turnips. Same size plot as the turnips and I will see which variety the deer eat. With the success Ive had with turnips the last 10 years I cant understand why others who plant them report their deer wont eat them. h.h.

I would be one. Tried them for 3 years and deer walked right by them. Maybe it was that they didn't know what they were or whatever but I don't know if I will try them again.

It seems like turnips and radishes are the same concept as both are brassicas. Mine are coming up great and IF we get some more rain will be really grown by season.

I will be interested in your experiment.

Im sure you guys know the deer mainly eat the leaves of the turnip and not the bulb, especially after a hard frost. Late winter they will eat the bulbs.

Im going to try and take pictures and will post them here. h.h.

The deer in my area won't touch turnips. I have planted them a few times and they never touch them. The deer in my area are different creatures though. I guess they have other stuff to eat they like better.

I didn't have any luck with radishes last year and have never had much luck with turnips.

Next spring I'm doing a plot of hydrangeas and hostas. They tear them up in my yard.

I got the Daikon radish seed a couple weeks ago and planted it beside the turnips. Both plots are the same size. Both are up about 2" or so. Should be interesting to see if they prefer one to the other. h.h.

All are about a foot high right now and doing well it seems. Got nothing to compare it to. I could use a little more rain. I got a little over 1/2 acre and with how I had to prepare the ground, they have done well.

I will try and post some pics at some point. I am guessing late season will be the ticket. Deer are moving through them but no sign of browse yet.

It was a pretty cheap plot to put out. I used most on my 1/2 acre and saved some back for a hidey hole plot and it is doing really well too.

Now just to sit back and wait for the area food to be gone and a couple frosts.

Took this picture today of my main plot. The middle strip has daikon radish on one side and turnip on the other side. The soybeans on both side are eaten down to 6" or less. Around the first of Oct I will disc up the beans and plant wheat. As you can see we need rain bad. h.h.

Not buck forage. Behind me in the picture is a long narrow plot planted with bin run oats and clover mix. Of the cereal grains I like winter wheat for gun and muzzy seasons which this plot is for. h.h.

FullRut,

A few years ago I planted oats and wheat with turnips in between them. Both plots were the same size. Up to the time a hard frost/freeze killed the oats deer didn't seem to prefer one to the other. They ate about the same in both plots. After the oats died the deer ate wheat.

Winter wheat feeds the whole winter and the following spring.

You never know I might try some Buck Forage Oats next year. h.h.

I planted some Pennington Deer greens this year. Radish and some turnips. Got their first rain two nights ago and been out since Sept 1. Nothing has sprouted which may be a good thing!

How do your radishes look Bean? This is one of my radish plots and they look real good. Mixed in some Buck Forage Oats with them and the deer are in them every night. This plot got the approval of my little boy Colt. lol

Hey mine are doing awesome!! I have them in 2 plots. This one is a small one tucked in by a creek and a 30 acre thicket. It is my favorite lil hidey hole spot that really gets good when crops are out. it is about 10 yards wide and 40 yards long.

Photo was taken w/ my old fashion flip phone. In this plot I have radishes over 7" long in the ground and a ton of forage.

[Linked Image]

I will have to take pics of the bigger one. Place looks like green carpet.

I had a bag of last years Evolved Harvest annual mix, so I just planted that along w/ the radishes. Saved me a little money. Deer are in it already.

Not even touching mine yet. Looks like late season will be when they hit them. Interesting how different deer are from one area to another. Of course this is the 1st year and it may be new to them.

I took this picture about 2 - 3 weeks ago. This whole area was full of turnips and the deer ate all bare areas you see in one week. I hand seeded more turnips and checked them yesterday and they are up about 2-3 inches. Ive had turnips planted in this spot before but the deer never ate it up like they did this year. h.h.
