INDIANAPOLIS - Two agencies are offering a reward for information about the shooting death of a whooping crane, a species that is protected by law.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are offering $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for killing the bird.
Officials said the bird was shot in southern Greene County near the White River in late December 2013.
The whooping crane, North America's tallest bird, is protected by both state and federal law.
The particular bird that was killed was part of an effort by wildlife officials to re-establish a flock to migrate between Wisconsin and Florida.
"This wildlife crime is significant in that it has undermined the tireless efforts put toward the recovery of the whooping crane in the Midwest,” said U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Assistant Special Agent in Charge Warren Buhl.
