Got my LAST science fair project to do this year. 2 down and 1 to go.
Any of you do science fair that had to do with hunting or fishing?
Ideas appreciated.

As a scientist and several year science fair judge, I would recommend going with something with a testable hypothesis, well developed experiments, good controls, and data to support or refute the hypothesis.
They will be looking for this type of work for the 6th grade level.
A fancy poster is nice, but did not effect my grading much...it's pretty obvious when the parents did the poster/project for the kid =)
The kids who I scored high and I chose as winners did not always have the 'coolest project', but did have a good testable hypothesis and could explain it, their methods, their data, and conclusions....the topic really did not matter much.

My son did an arrow penetration test using different weight field points. He used 75,100,125,150,175. He used same bow and same arrow and shot each tip 3 shots. It turned out nice. We did it at our local indoor archery range.

If you have a chronograph, you could play on the arrow test mentioned above but with speed. Theoretically, the speed should decrease at a linear rate as you increase arrow weight, but what could be seen is that the bow will become more efficient as arrow weight goes up and the decrease in speed will slow down (amount of speed lost per grains increased, will decrease).

I like the arrow idea.
I did one on the hibernation of a turtle in 4th or 5th grade. I had a snapping turtle shell from a pretty good sized turtle my dad had caught. By about the third day on display the shell and mud and water that it was in smelled awful, i mean whole school smelled! LOL, I got to take my project home early!

Thanks guys for all the ideas. Luke has decided to: Compare the Strength of Different Types of Fishing Line.
We couldn't talk mom into the gopro outer space project. That was really cool.

[/b]Yeah......that what I use to think before switching to Suffix832 You need to fish in some of snag infested rivers and get off the big water to really put it to the test

We couldn't talk mom into the gopro outer space project. That was really cool. If I can make a suggestion have him test the lines with different knots. Not all knots will hold 100% of the line strength. h.h.

Ok the results:
We used a digital scale to measure the poundage of each line strength and a ratchet to slowly add tension.
All line was rated 20#. All was tied w/ improved clinch All broke AWAY from the knot - which I found very interesting.
Trilene Big Game mono broke at 21# Pline Fluoro broke at 24# Spiderwire braid broke at 18#.
We both thought braid would be stronger but it was Fluorocarbon.
He got an "A" and I am now done with science fairs.

That is dang cool. Now, if there is a "next" project, how about trying the same thing but at difference line temperatures to emulate varied conditions of water temperature to see if the lines act the same way at different temps. Just a thought!

Someone at my daughter's school did the exact same project, and got first prize today.
