We are asking for public feedback on a suggested rule that would limit sport and commercial fishermen to one large catfish of each species per day (35" and larger for flatheads and blues, 28" for channel cats) on all Indiana rivers and streams including the Ohio River. This is the same base rule that we proposed a couple years ago that mirrors Ohio's catfish rule. It is also the same rule that Kentucky has proposed for the Ohio River although they have included more liberal provisions for commercial fishermen below Cannelton Lock and Dam (which we are not suggesting).
Our suggested rule would also raise the minimum catfish size limit in Indiana from the current 10" to 13" on all streams and rivers except the Ohio River. When we proposed catfish protections back in 2011 we found good support for an increased minimum size limit on inland streams although our 15" proposal at that time was judged by many to be too big of a jump too fast. We'll see what level of public support exists today for an important but less dramatic increase in the size limit.
