Read gundog or waterdog by Wottten I think... best books I ever read on the subject .his techniques came with results....for me anyway.. ill find the books and post the details... gun shy dogs are worthless.. don't give up just yet.. I old is the dog? Start with some 22 caps outside while you feed him...praise after every shot .... ill find the books...

Hey Keith and Jack,

Have you guys read the book, "A Rough Shooting Dog" by Charles Fergus. It is about the 1st year of his English Springer. Pretty good read.

J26 - I have 15-20 books on dog training by Tarrant, Duffy, and others. If you want I can send ya some to read through and see if they will help ya.

Staying very loyal. I have not pushed him at all this season. Noticed something in yard training. He liked the pigeon and quail but went to kennel stater pistol came out. He is three and never had a problem til fireworks from neighbor scared him. I'll try anything, I'm past the mad stage, i called breeder and told him to come get dog before he takes a long drive with me. But my wife and some soul searching calmed me down. I won't give up. Ill take all advice read any books just can't afford a pro trainer. No more extra cash around. Thanks to all. Worse case, I keep him and buy another dog.

Theres a old coonhunters trick to breaking a gun shy dog.Its all about food. You withhold food the first day. Day 1 without food..You shoot a gun then try feeding the dog..If the dog does not eat right off.You take the food away until the 2nd day. Then try shooting again..By the 3rd day 90% of dogs will be eatting while your shooting a gun..Your better of using a starter pistol starting out.Or even use metal pans .It wont hurt your dog at all as long as they have water...But it wont work with all dogs some are just ruined....The best way to break dogs is when they are puppys. When you feed them starting at 3-4 weeks old you beat metal pans together..That breaks 99% of dogs and you never have touble with them...You can also leave metal pans in the kennels for them to play with...

Sometimes after the 4th of July fireworks(which sometimes seems to go on for weeks)a dog just needs some time away from ANY type of gunfire. I know you may want to try something around him to see if he's better, but don't. Be patient! When you do get in the field again, make sure he's in lots of birds. Good luck and hang with him, he would still rather be your dog whether he can hunt or not.

He is a wire hair. Not to headstrong, a little aloof sometimes.

Three year old dog is going to be a difficult chore, if it was me I'd be in the market for a new puppy.

Have you had him in an open area and shot over him. Some dogs are imprinted to their home area.

I'd take him out and he wouldn't leave side of truck. I had to heel him on leash a few yards from truck, then cut him loose. Then he ran good in the brush. But still not shooting over him, I grab starter pistol and his head goes down. Haven't tried holding back the food.

If he's been beating or shot at then your chances are slim..

No beatings. I'm gonna run him hard this weekend. Alot of bonding time. I thought about leaving an unloaded starter pistol in his kennel. Let him get use to seeing it again. I've got an extra one that's cheap. So if he chews it or pisses on it I won't get mad.

Put a 30 foot lead on him and tie a small block o.f wood to it to then turn him out and let him drag it.. this will help him learn to hunt close. Pop a couple of shots now and then and follow it up with a treated and tons ofpraise.. before you know it you will have a fine gun dog!
