Went and scouted a new place this evening,... lay of the land, and landowner briefing has me stumped.... The property is about a 20 acre field.(currently cut soybeans) It has old fence rows with mature trees on 2 sides(standing corn on the other sides of the fencerows), a small thicket far to dense to hunt on the third side, and road/house on the fourth side. Landowner says deer enter his field from the back (a side with fencerow/corn) then they feed through his field and enter the thicket. So far this scene is easy enough to set up on(provided that the corn gets cut), but here's where it gets tricky....Landowner says he sees the deer in the morning....

Actually thats a GREAT idea....for opening morning.....after that, I don't expect to see them in that field again during daylight hours. Do you have any experience hunting a field edge in the morning Jeff? Or Anybody? Any luck at it?

a big guestion is what is the hunting pressure going to be like around the property. if its not real bad the deer will stick to there normal routines for the most part. i tend to like to hunt small tracks of woods and fence rows. the deer must travel somewhere

I would hunt the "far to dense to hunt side"

Agree w Cody. That's a tight little area so be careful of the wind direction......that would be my main concern to work out. Be able to see in the thick stuff without blowing them out.

I would hunt the "a small thicket" after opening weekend of gun season. Opening day, I would be in the best funnel on the property...

I have killed several bucks and does on field edges in the morning during gun season.

One comes to mind, I saw a nice buck cruising a cut corn field edge headed right for my brothers ladder stand. I called him on the radio. He said yep I see him, a few seconds later, He drilled the buck right in the shoulder with his muzzleloader. I saw the buck plowing down the hill into the bottom where he expired. We had the deer back at the truck by ~830. Good thing for my brother as he forgot his boots and was wearing tennis shoes.
