Well, the chucks are out and about, so time to start this years HH Groundhog Contest...

RULES

(1) Any legal equipment (firearm, bow, x-bow) may be used. All shots must be taken in a safe manner. No trap and shoot. Tree stands are legal. Use of dogs to locate or take groundhogs is prohibited, however, a tracking dog may be used to locate a downed groundhog taken using legal methods.

(2) Two Scoring Divisions:

- Points Division: measure width of chest span from tip of feet X length from nose to tail for total point score.

- Weight Division: Weigh your chuck and report weight to the nearest 1/4 pound. Chuck must be weighed "au natural", so addition of water, lead shot or other materials, will result in immediate disqualification and a lifetime ban from future HH Groundhog Contests.

(3) You must post a picture of your chuck showing either measurement or weight in the "2007 HH Groundhog Contest Scoring" thread for score to be valid.

(4) Two Calendar Divisions:

- Spring Contest: March 26 thru June 30, 2007. Chuck must be taken within these dates and end date kills must be reported by July 2nd in the scoring thread.

- Summer Contest: July 1 thru September 30. Closing date for reporting kills is October 2.

(5) Decision of the judges is final.

(6) HH accepts no responsibility for spousal unrest which may result from excessive chuck hunting activities.

(7) Winners will receive a certificate suitable for framing, board bragging rights, and any other prizes which may be donated during the course of the contest.

(8) Additional rules may be added as needed at the judge's discretion.

(9) Groundhogs must be taken within the boundaries of the State of Indiana, i.e., chucks taken in other states cannot be entered into the contest.

(10) The use of electronic "groundhog in distress", "woodchuck howl", or "whistle pig challenge howl" calls is strictly prohibited. The use of infrared "woodchuck locators" is also prohibited. Mouth calls are legal.

Good luck!!!! Game on...

Here are my spring entries. These two were taken on June 9th. Both were shot with a .223 from between 200 and 225 yards in Madison Co.

I was getting 25x21=525 and 27x19+=519.75.

It's pretty hard to capture the measurement in a photograph when you're by yourself.

Sounds fair enough to me.

The bottom jaw should hinge upward and not affect length. I'll close the mouth on any more that I get.

Actually, the other one probably gets a better score even though it's not as long.

The 30th is coming up quick, so get your entries in for the Spring contest...

Looks like ryanrw's 494 whistle pig is in the lead so far for the points race...

I'm going to go out early tomorrow and see if this rain will bring'em out...

Congrats to the Spring winners!!!

Game on for the Summer Contest...

I'm pigless so far... discovered I have a coyote who set up a den near our hayfield where we've scored in past years, so I think she's either scared off or eaten our resident whistle pigs...

I've seen her out once, and have seen the pups out the past week a couple of times, so I've got some different hunting to do there...
