Was wondering if anyone else uses vermiculite for keeping there traps from freezing. Had a guy I work with that learned about it in trapping college. I tried it out and love it. As of now I am using no salt and they are doing great. 3 cubic feet at Menards for 15 bucks. Should be enough to last for several years.

I thought vermiculite was added to potting soil because it absorbs, and holds water? Let us know how it works out.

So far it has done well for me but we have not had any single digit nights yet. I done a little research on it before I tried it and from what I gather the hotter it is the more it will absorb moisture. With the freezing temps. , it will not absorb alot and is about like using peat moss. I like it because it is alot finer the peat and blends in better. Once we get some good cold nights I will test them to see if they still fire at that point.

Ive always used dry dirt and CC. I bag up bean chaff and use it in bean fields, same with corn and hay chaff. All does well until you get one of those 2" soakers, and the bottom drops out the next day or two. I have NEVFER had good luck with peat. When it gets soaked, and the temps drop, it just freezes into one solid chunk!!! Really interested in how the vermiculite works!!!!

I like peat moss and salted dry dirt from under bridges.

Yesterday I used peat moss with calcium chloride mixed in. I didnt double stake my traps and the ground is soft from recent rains so I hope my traps are still there today. h.h.
