caught one this morning. our first one. i want to skin it and tan but afraid of getting sprayed. can they spray once dead? and if so how do you prevent it.

They can't spray, but if you squeeze around the anus, or make the wrong cut around those glands back there, its all over!!!! Slow and careful is the only advise I can give you...

PSE, throw caution to the wind! You only live once! But, I'd make sure you have alternative sleeping arrangements for a while, just in case.

Look around on some trapping sites, and you tube. There might be helpful hints there. I've never really had that kind of interest, so I don't know! Good luck PSEBUCK!!!!

right, use a razor blade (a knife is not sharp enough) and carefully cut around the anus and ever so carefully remove the glands using light pressure and careful cutting.

This dvd is well worth it to show you how it's done.

kill them any way you want then in a couple of days tie the hide to a rock with a wire and sink them in a riffle in a creek for a few days and smell is all but gone.. do this in cold weather so decomposition is not a factor

thanks guys it actually made us feel rather accomplished. i will skin everyone we catch from now on. its tricky and takes a real sharp.blade but the furs look awesome

I grew up skinning for a fur buyer...Art Bair, out of Valparaiso(god rest his soul)...I can remember on more than one occasion clearing out the fur house when one of us punctured skunk glands.....mink also have glands, but not as strong as a skunk....

Congrats, now you guys can move onto a lobotomy ....

well after all we wehnt through the skunk has defeated us. we had his fur soaking to get the smell out and his hair started slipping and falling out. it was to bad to save. lesson learned i guess. dissapointed but will go on.

But your now prepared for the future! Sorry to hear the outcome on this though.

Thats odd. It was awful fresh for that to start already. What did you soak it in? If you wanted to save it for a tan, you should have salted the flesh side immediately. Then you could have just washed the fur side.

water laundry soap and baking soda. worst part is i got the salt today but it was to late. i know for next time i guess. just sucks after all that to loose it.
