I was talking to a guy at Gander a while back and he used 440's for yotes. He told me he has great success with them. I didnt ask him what kind of a set he used for catching yotes, so those of you that do use the big traps what setup do you use?

I was looking at them yesterday and they were priced a 21.00 each. h.h.

Think those are 2 big to be legal on land aren't they? Thought the 220s were as big as you could go without being under water. I could be wrong but I don't think you can set those on dry land.

HH,

NEVER listen to people at Gander Mountian! Very few know what the he!! they are talking about...in any department. I'm sure there are exceptions. 440 cannot be set above the water line. The 330's also cannot be set above the water line. 330's measure 10" square (depending on brand). In Indiana this type of trap cannot exceed 7.5" square, or 8" round. A 220, and smaller (measures 7"square) is the only one that can be set above the water.

The ONLY experience I have had with those big S.O.B's is they will break your thumb!!! I know. I slipped up setting a beaver den one night after dark.

Yaz, This wasnt a store employee, just some guy who told me he trapped yotes. Guess I better read the trapping guide before I do something stupid...lol.

A couple years ago I did have one side of a 220 go off on my hand but luckily I had on a good pair of insulated leather gloves but it still stung pretty good. Every since then I make sure the safety doesnt slip off while setting them. h.h.

snares. a fraction of the weight, cost, work and danger.

as stated above, anything bigger than 220 is illegal for use on land

a friend of mine once lost his balance settin a beaver den, wound up with a 330 on his right arm...completely thru it. Had him above the wrist and elbow. He had to drive about 15 miles back to the house to get help getting it off. lol

glad it wasnt me smile

I still stick by my statement about some of the employees. Had a young guy at the gun counter come over while I was looking at guns. I asked to see a .300 WIn. short magnum. He asked me......"why don't you get the .300 winchester. You can shoot it, and the short mag out of the same gun!" Just like you can shoot a .357 in a .38 special"!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!!! There have been others, but that one took the cake.

Some is pushing it, I'd say 80% or better. Worked at gander for a year and dicks for almost 3, I couldn't even have conversations with over half my coworkers because they were seriously clueless. Over hearing their conversations at times were comical, especially during deer season when there were multiple deer sightings of bucks over 200. I honestly think they were talking field dress weight not antler inches but they swore by it.

Don't take that as personal trad.. I said SOME! laugh Since I told some not so good stuff, to be fair, I had a couple of older gentlemen that really saved my rear end there. They were guys in the fishing departments at Castleton, and Greenwood. I remember Jim was fellas name at Castleton, and I think Charlie was at Greenwood. Had a mishap about 7 years ago, and lost ALL of my rods/reels out of my boat on the Interstate 74 way before daylight one morning. Don't know exactly what happened, as I had done this for years. I had a carpet runner that I laid all my rigs on in the floor of my boat. for whatever reason, they came out. Didn't know it till I got to Raccoon. We backtracked, and found them in 1000's of pieces on the road. I wanted to puke!!!!! Anyway, my good ole insurance company decided instead of paying for them, minus my deductable, they would pro-rate the gear. For $2,800.00 worth of Shimano Calcutta's and GLoomis rods, I got a check for $980.00!!!!! Obviously is was spring, and fishing season. And to drop that kind of cash on stuff it took me years to accumulate was NOT an option. Went to Jim at Gander and told him what I needed. I'm pretty particular on my striper rods and reels as far as actions, and gear ratios. Jim got on the phone, and worked for three straight hours to get stuff lined up. He worked with the guy at the Greenwood store. In 3 days, I got a call from Jim that my stuff was in his store!!!!!!! I had 8 new rigs with Gander Mountain brand rods, Garcia 6500's, and Diawa LC's. They worked with FOR me,and got the stuff I needed, for the money I had. I think I had less than $200.00 out of pocket! I will always be grateful for those two guys. Both of them must have retired. I have not seen them, as every time I went in there, I thanked them!

Not taken personal I agree with you! Like I said I worked with em and know truelly how clueless most of em are. There were some good ones but few and far between. Then again I haven't worked there for years. But last time I called to ask if they had 220's the guy I talked to had no clue what they were. Had to explain it to him and he said he went to look said no, stopped by 2 days later and they had em. I try to stay away from there at all costs, either order online and all my trapping stuff is coming from Hoosier trapper, made multiple trips tere this last year and everyone of them were learning lessons from every employee I came across in there. Learned something everytime I walked outta there.
