I got a few snares out in anticipation of some snow. Little did I know every fence row, regardless of its direction, would have 3' of snow piled up on them!!!!! These are two of my best sets into a barn lot. After an hour of digging them a trail to come through, I hope it works!!!! :rolleyes:

just wait for fresh yote tracks and hang em where they come thru. good time to put in some high eye appeal flat sets too. Take a rake/broom out and clear a spot in the field/pasture about ten foot in diameter. churn up some soil to really get their attention. A big dark spot in sea of white will draw them from a long ways. Another good set is bale of straw out in the open. Toss some corn under it. mice will move in. food for the yotes plus canines love gettin on top of high spots to get a better look around. One last great snow set...drive around the perimeter of field/pasture with four wheeler/truck then hang snares in the tire tracks. Yotes will use them for easier walking

+1 on the tire track approach. I know a guy in the Lafayette area that drives weed fields in the same manner and then set the snares in the tire tracks. Leo and his brothers usually caught over a 100 a year but supposedly stopped a little over 50 this year when their buyer quit buying.

I set my snares Saturday. Checked them yesterday and had a rabbit by the neck in one...lol. He was still alive so I turned him loose. Not quite sure how the rabbit tripped the snare??? I havent run them today so I hope there is at least one caught. After the fresh snow I only saw one set of yote tracks but Im sure there are plenty more around. h.h.

Those are good sets to make for coyotes Dave. And I had intended on making some sets like that. Here lies the problem.......There is too much snow to get on the fields, plus with all the snow insulating the ground, it is muddy as **** under it. I've been hung in the mud twice this week already just working cattle. Drove the block yeasterday looking for coyote tracks crossing the roads. They must be hanging tight to the thickets, because we only seen one set of fresh tracks. The good news out of all of this is the deer can't get to the corn in the fields, and they are tearing up my oats and clover plots right now. It's deer hunting mode for the rest of the week. THEN, I'll worry about the yotes.

The tire tracks in the snow reminded me of what an old rancher out west told me. He said they set two traps right in the tracks and just cover them with snow. The set the pans exactly 26" on center apart. That is the stride of a walking coyote out there. I think the stride is actually approximately 13" apart, but they set them 26" to get some space between the traps. I think our yaps are a little bigger, so that may change a little. I'll have to measure the next set of tracks I see to find out.

in deep snow, multiple yotes will use the same track/footprint. Old trapper trick is to approach a yote track at 90 degree angle, then standing to the side slide a trap into a track from the side. try not to disturb the snow above. Use dry moss under trap to keep from freezing down and wire to a drag

Got to this set and no yote or snare! The yote worked the link apart and the snare came off the ground cable......bummer! He was caught for a while and chewed up every stick and limb he could, there is blood all over those limbs in the picture. Lots of blood in the snow from his mouth. He must have been caught by the leg. Im sure this guy is snare smart now and most likely wont catch him again....lol h.h.

It has been really slow for me this year so far, I did have one snared yote on Sunday morning. I had another but he broke or chewed my snare cable and got loose. Urggg. I only have caught 3 so far.

I have learned the hard way, you really have to watch where you place a snare, and make sure you have heavy enough cable and connections on the snares for coyotes. Some will just lay down and wait on you to show up, and others will tear up everything within reach, and get loose. In some instances, a long 7' snare is called for, and others, I shorten them to just a foot on top of the loop. In some instances, its best not to give them too much room to move around after they are caught.

+1 Dave on the beavers.....nothing easy about them!!!! My Father has caught nearly 30 so far this year for farmers, and he still has a long list of places to get to. He commented the other day that it is wearing him out!!

The dog some how worked the quick link apart??? Most of the time when I set next to bushes the dog will hang himself. This set was just to the side of an old mowed path that had grown shut and it lead to a open path a few feet away. This is the first time I had a quick link open so from now on I will use pliers to tighten them up. Time to run snares...h.h.

With the mild night we had around here, the coyotes moved good. Until this snow melts down, I'm going ot have to do it with traps for a while.

Snare where blank today but I did see a lot of fresh tracks. Several of the tracks got kind of close to my sets but change direction.

I put out a deer carcus I had saved with the shot set-up about 175 yards. I plan on setting that bait pile in a couple days. Friday I will reset some of the snares.

I might head to Hoosier Trapper in a few days for some snare supplies. I kind of hate doing that because I always end up buying way more stuff than I need.....LOL h.h.

You just have to find their trails and/or setup bait stations of carcasses and set the trails heavy...

I start trapping beavers in a few weeks...weather permitting
