Seeing the thread on quail reminds me that we have seen several woodcock at our club recently . Saw 5 on the lane last night.

It used to be common to see them during the early summer over here next to the Wabash. We get a lot of migrants in the spring and fall. Some of them stayed and nested. We train our trial dogs on them from about the end of February to the end of March. Used to occasionally move a hen off a nest at the end of March, but haven't done that in more than ten years. The DNR had a woodcock singing survey on the net, but I think they stopped posting it. Last time I saw it, the survey count was close to nil.
