I registered for the hunt in early september and when I looked just today it says "no record found", so I guess I can try again next year!

Put my dog down a few years back.. I see no reason to train another one if we don't get some habitat = birds... I miss it.. I'd give up deer hunting to bird hunt.. and watch a good dog work.

Back in the 90's for several years I camped for a month in the UP of Michigan with my Brit and beagles. 30 or more points an afternoon would be the norm, mostly woodies but there were always a few ruffled grouse. It was not uncommon to flush two - three woodies setting together.

Once, about a day before season opened I was out scouting a new area, stopped and parked my truck just off the dirt road. I walked across the road and the area was covered in ferns that were just turning brown.

All of a sudden about 20 yards into the ferns grouse started flying up, one right after the other, 12 in all. To my surprise they were sharp tail grouse and not legal in Michigan. Its was a very cool thing to see. h.h.

A few years ago I called and asked that question and the woman told me there were 225 total spots available for all the hunts added together and more than 5,000 applications. That gives you a .045 chance of getting drawn. h.h.

We can always hope for better habitat and more birds. I would love a huntable population of quail or pheasant. Until someone gets people to improve habitat we will continue to have no birds, but current corn prices are not going to allow that. Just read an article in the IBJ this morning talking about how ethanol and corn prices drive farmers to plant every acre they can. I do not blame the farmers at all, I would do what I can to provide my family with the best life possible. It is also unpopular to pay incentives to not plant. Those incentives provide us with places to hunt. Even when in place they are under utilized. I will deer hunt now and hope no one manages to screw that up for us. I worry because even my deer sightings are down the last few years, but I seen fox, mink, new birds, and otters where I never have before. So maybe I should take up trapping.
