I listened to 5 gobblers hammering away this afternoon in Parke co. right before the rain moved in.

The light rain and some thick cover made it easy to move within about 80 yards of them.

Looks like a tom in the back, I'm not sure in the middle, and a bearded hen up front... laugh

I had 4 or 5 gobbling like crazy this morning in Parke co. I just left the owl call in my pocket and sat and listened....

Had a couple close by in Jefferson County but they didn't open up until 7:15. I was pretty surprised at how late it was before they starting talking.

cool I have not been hearing any lately but yet I have not been out lately. Some guys from church have been seeing many turkeys lately. One question- what specific type of call do you guys use to locate and hear the toms

hoot owl call or crow call before the season. I never use a turkey call before the season is open.

I have a few but this is my favorite:

Got two I hear pretty consistent from the front porch that roost down on the creek. I don't hunt them though. You can learn to do the barred owl with your natural voice pretty easy. Just look up who cooks for you, who cooks for you all on utube or google it. Really if you got crows, owls, woodpeckers and such mouthing off, the gobblers will be making some noise too. I hear you Parrot Head, slow day in Jefferson co!

Yes, it was, people think I am telling them a tale when I say I hear 20 plus. They will start on one ridge an just go on around. Not all on the property I hunt of course.

I hear you and can relate. I think overall I hear a little less gobbling than I did 10-15 years ago but every year is different. It used to be common to hear 5-10 gobblers on one big tract of public I hunt. But I'd rather have one hammerin and no other trucks in the parking area than ten birds hollerin and a parking area full of competition.....it just takes one to play.

I hunt right across from this big tract of public woods. I will hear one gobble during season over there an hear all the callers move in closer an closer trying to kill it. Dangerous stuff.

You probably know this already, but the terrain is quite rough. Just like any public land situation, be smart and defensive where you setup, sometimes people stalk decoys or hen calling there.

Some guys on here have stories of decoys being stalked while turkey hunting there by some shall we call them 'inexperienced' hunters.

I heard the deer have legs that are shorter on one side to compensate for fhe steep hills.

The turkeys like to fly from one ridge to another. And, they always fly to a ridge you are not on. wink They know you are not likely to come after them!! laugh

May all our hunts be safe, enjoyable, and deeply appreciated.

I use to go sign in an then go hunt the land I am on just in case I heard one over there I could go after it. Last time I did that I heard at least 3 guys coming in on me over there. I got scared enough that I was going to get shot I started yelling so they knew I was there an got out of there an never tried that again.
