I plan to break out the 'best turkey decoy' jake this fall for the first time.

Anybody hunted with decoys in the fall before?

Any tips or tricks?

Never have. Used to try to bust the flock when we hunted Kentucky and then sit down immediately and start kee kee calls. Really works well.

Man I've never been any good on fall birds... spring birds seem to come easy to me. I'll try again this year and see what I can learn

I usually set out one hen in the fall. Doesn't bother the deer too much and helps the turkeys focus away from me.

Yes they work and can work well. But you need to go about it differently. Basically you need to pattern the birds. Fall birds become pretty predictable once you know their daily movements. Then simply set one decoy out in their travel route and wait. If it is a group of toms then use your jake decoy. If it is a group of hens then use a hen decoy. Don't call, just wait. They will often be somewhat aggressive to the intruder and allow you an easy shot. It isn't as exciting as decoying them in during the spring but it works well. You simply have to be patient and wait them out.

Years ago in Kentucky, i busted a huge flock of birds near Sparta and they scattered along a wooded hillside. A few kee kee calls and it was really unreal. The whole side of the hill came alive with birds talking everywhere and they came from every direction. Even after I shot one the birds kept coming. It was every bit a interesting as a spring hunt. But, busting a flock is one hard thing to do.
